Great pics...keep it up! Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-21-2008 I feel like I have been going through Firepics withdrawl....between a number of family events, traveling for work, and some strange weather, it has been a challenge getting photos and posting photos. Hopefully, things will change. Work had me out at a variety of different locations across Virginia the last 2-3 weeks. Fitting in a quick station visit and dodging some nasty thunder storms have been the challenge. I did have the opportunity to visit Hot Springs, Virginia up in the mountains in Bath County. The Homestead is a beautiful hotel and meeting place and the entire complex is protected by the Hot Springs VFD. I had several days of meetings and had made arrangements to meet the Fire Chief at the Hot Springs VFD after my meetings. The night before my scheduled visit, we had some intense thunder storms. I was told the Hot Springs ladder truck only gets out a handful of times during the year.....it got out that night for a lightning strike at a local church. Fortunately, the day of my visit it was not raining, but it was not exactly sunny either. We had made plans to take the apparatus to a nearby field, but the rain ruined those plans. I was able to photograph most of the apparatus at the station, which I will share here. Engine 1 at Hot Springs is this 1982 Mack MC686F10 1000/750 with serial number 1056. It was purchased new by Hot Springs. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-21-2008 Engine 2 at Hot Springs is this 1999 American LaFrance/3D Metals 1500/1000 s/n 3045. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-21-2008 On some earlier pages of this thread, I posted the apparatus of Covington, Virginia. When traveling to Hot Springs, I traveled by I64 and got off one of the Covington exits. Over a mountain and about 30 minutes later I got to Hot Springs. Covington operates a Sutphen ladder truck. Prior to the Sutphen, the FD operated this 1988/1949 American LaFrance 100' aerial. When Covington purchased the ALF, it had an older 1949 ALF open cab. It was returned to ALF in 1988, it was rehabed, and it received a new 1988 ALF cab. The Sutphen replaced the ALF, and it was donated to Hot Springs. One agreement was made as part of the donation.....if Covington's Sutphen is ever placed out of service for an extended time, Hot Springs sends the ALF back to Covington to run. Hot Springs, VA Bath County Ladder 3 1988 American LaFrance/1949 American LaFrance 100' s/n L3936 ex- Covington, VA Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-21-2008 Tanker duties at Hot Springs are handled by Tanker 9, a 1995 Mack RD690S/Amthors 500/3000. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-21-2008 Other apparatus at Hot Springs include a small Chevy/Saulsbury mini pumper and a small Chevrolet rescue truck. The rescue truck will be replaced by a new 2008 GMC 4500/Northwestern Emergency Vehicles squad truck, which was scheduled to arrive the day I was taking photos. Here is the Hot Springs VFD. The land was donated to the FD by The Homestead. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 06-21-2008 The last from Hot Springs....there is a strong relationship between the fire department and The Homestead resort. The resort's "water truck" is this 1969 Mack CF611F10 1000/750 with serial number 1099. It is stored at the resorts property yard just down from the fire station. I was told it us used around the property but I was also told if I made an offer, I might be able to take it home. It is an old Hot Springs, VA VFD fire truck that was originally painted red. This Mack was photographed the day I came to Hot Springs for my meetings.....when the weather was absolutely beautiful. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA |
