Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 07-11-2008 Bristol, Virginia's Station 3... Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 07-11-2008 Last from this trip....the Bristol insignia. I had a great trip and yet again met some great firefighters from Virginia. Hope you enjoyed! The tower is a county purchased truck housed at a volunteer station that is career staffed. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - Guest - 07-12-2008 Hey, what a coincidence! I was watching "Shockwave" on the History channel last evening. They did a piece on Bristol Va. and an exploding gas tanker fire they were on. What is a "life saving crew"? Is this the same as EMS? I saw a life saving crew in Danville last year Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - Guest - 07-12-2008
Hey, what a coincidence! Years ago they did all transport for both Bristols and Sullivan County TN and part of Washington County VA. Mike contact me when you come back this way and I will give you the tour of Bristol TN and the Racetrack. I will take you up on that and will contact you next time I am back in Bristol. Thanks, Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - Truckman - 07-13-2008
I arrived in Bristol, Virginia later that afternoon. Prior to checking into the hotel, I decided to find Bristol's main fire station to see what they had behind the doors. These guys were fantastic. They were very nice and had no hesitations moving the apparatus around for photos. Bristol is well know on the NASCAR circuit for its raceway. The state lines of Virginia and Tennessee run down "State Street" - on one side you are in Virginia and the other Tennessee. Bristol, Virginia has three stations, and Bristol, Tennessee has four. Hopefully one day I will be able to visit the Tennessee stations. At one point, the FD's in both Bristol's were numbered in a way that even number unit designations were Virginia and odd were Tennessee. I don't believe that is the plan any longer, although some apparatus are still numbered with old unit numbers. First up at Station 1 is Quint 1, a 1999 Pierce Dash 75' 2000/500. Job number EC185. I was told that this Quint was ordered off of the large Richmond Quint order. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA
Mike you are correct. This Quint was ordered off our contract at the time. Bristol sent two firefighters up to us for two weeks and they did ride alongs, lived at station 1 and got to see a lot of operations between RFD Quint 1 and others that they ran with, plus riding with the BC to most jobs while they were here. I had then down at our training center as well as having a Quint Co there for them to drive and operate too. They took what they learned back and presented it to the Chief. Good photos from your last photo trip. Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - hungrybus - 07-15-2008 I already posted this in The Hungrybus Thread, but figured, I would put it here also. This was at The Baltimore Pierce Service Center today for a Training Class. Fairfax Va. New Heavy Rescue. Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - hungrybus - 07-15-2008 Officers sdie view. Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - BA000049 - 07-16-2008 Mike, Did Dale City letter the ladder from Ambler (Montgomery County, PA) yet ? Many thanks, Bruce Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - firemag - 07-16-2008 Bruce, I was just in Dale City today shooting rigs. The ladder you mentioned is still red and will not be painted. It has not been lettered. I'm told it will be a "joint"venture between OWL and DC. OWL will store the truck at its shop and maintain it since DC purchased it. I'm told it now has wheel simulators and some new lighting. I was hoping to shoot it today, but it was not ready. Jerry Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - firemag - 07-16-2008 Hey Bus, Did you by chance get the FXCO shop number and Pierce job number? Jerry Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - drfeelgood - 07-16-2008
Bruce, I was just in Dale City today shooting rigs. Jerry
Jerry, It has aluminum wheels and getting lighting and other upgrades. Dale City and OWL are splitting the costs on many of the upgrades and hopfully it will be done by August. The truck will remain red (silly color choice <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue1.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />) but will be lettered for Dale City. I will get pics of it when its done. Bus, 411 was at Dale City on Tuesday for a demo but I didnt get any pics. Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 07-18-2008 I was in Newport News this week for a meeting and found that I was right down the street from Station 6, which houses an unusual HAZMAT unit that I have been trying to track down and photograph. This is a busy house. I had been by the station three prior times and it was empty, except the HAZMAT sitting in the station. This week I dropped by again, and no one was home. Just as I was leaving a medic unit that was transferred to the station pulled up, but unfortunately, they could not move the HAZMAT out. Just as I was leaving another crew came back - I finally found my driver. HAZMAT 1 is a 2004 Pierce Lance with a trailer also built by Pierce. I was told that Newport News ended up getting this truck because the military cancelled an order and Newport News was able to purchase it. It has Pierce job number 14972. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 07-18-2008 Another shot of HAZMAT 1 with compartment doors open. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 07-18-2008 Also at Station 6 is Squad 6, which runs as an engine with some extrication equipment. I learned that any lettering on Newport News apparatus in blue represents rescue squads or squads. Newport News, VA Squad 6 2006 Pierce Enforcer 1500/750 job # 18013-03 Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 07-18-2008 I left Newport News to make my way to Tappahannock, and hit some real rural areas. I was able to re-visit the King William VFD in Aylett, Virginia - and found someone (of course, after banging on the door, I had to phone the station because I suspected someone was inside because a car was in the parking lot. I think I woke him up). I posted King William's apparatus on page 42 of this thread. King William received a donated Ford C engine from the King George VFD this year (King George photos posted on page 60 of this thread). This Ford is an addition to the apparatus already at King William. King William VFD Aylett, VA Engine 12 1984 Ford C8000/FMC 1000/1000 s/n 9129 ex- King George, VA NOTE: This engine has an "Omega" emblem on the side. Not sure if that was part of the FMC line or a company that might have done some rehab work. Any input?? Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous - mnsand - 07-18-2008 Now I was rolling the dice.....it was getting later in the afternoon and I found myself somewhat near Sparta, a small station I have always wanted to visit. I got there, and no one was home. Just as I began strategizing how and where to find someone, a Sparta ALS response car came back to the station. Several phone calls later and a very nice gentleman came down to the station to move apparatus. Sparta has a new Pierce PUC that will be delivered this year. First up is Engine 40, a 1998 Freightliner 80/Pierce 1000/1250 with job number EB353. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA |
