Dave Bowen photos - hondok - 10-06-2012
Please pardon my stupidity, but what is this unit used for?
Baltimore County has operated a low pressure carbon dioxide unit for a number of years - it is intended for use for fire incidents in the Sparrows Point steel plant(s). I believe that Bethlehem Steel used to operate a similar unit before they sold the plant. Dave Bowen photos - chucksteak - 10-06-2012 There had been a picture of the Bethelehem Steel rig on this site before. It was on a Mack R chassis.
Here is this rig's predecessor, a 1983 GMC Topkick/1969 Cardox 6-ton CO2; the original 69 Mack R chassis was reportedly totalled in a wreck with a train. 1992 photo by J.D.Floyd,WW Jenkins collection Dave Bowen photos - truck1882 - 10-06-2012
Baltimore County has operated a low pressure carbon dioxide unit for a number of years - it is intended for use for fire incidents in the Sparrows Point steel plant(s).
Thanks for the info, I figured it must have something to do with an industrial area or an airport, but didn't really know. Dave Bowen photos - Guest - 10-07-2012 It's the same rig that Beth Steel had. When we took over fire department operations for Beth Steel back in the late 80's we took their apparatus as well as their rank and file. Since then the rig was replaced with the before mentioned Freightliner/3D. It gets used more for mutual aid calls in the city then anything else. Curious to see now that the plant has been sold and will be torn down how long we will keep it. Its very strange not seeing any activity around the huge plant. It reminds of when the town of Sparrows Point was dismantled to make room for the steel mill expansion in the '70s. It will be interesting to see what becomes of the area, as I heard the property will go to auction and most likely be sub divided. I also hear rumors of station 57 being closed and Engine 57's "new" quint will go to station 9 (Edgemere). Special Unit 57 will stay and possibly go to station 14 with the Hazmat, if Balto.County adds an addition to the fire house. Mo Dave Bowen photos - Guest - 10-07-2012 There are so many rumors right now with them. From disbanding 57 to making them a all day work company and bringing engine 6 back up to 24 hours. Since 57's piece is so tall it only fits in the newer stations. 9 getting it is getting tossed around a lot. Your right Jeff it is ashame to see this place that employed thousands of people become a waste land.
