Question for the FLA crowd: Why is it that all the small FD's utilize a double-digit numbering system (ie E45, R27, T33, etc.) as compared to the larger departments that start with 1 and progress numerically upward? Also, any pics from the Port Charlotte area? Thanks in advance

I'm not sure what you mean? Palm Beach County, Miami-Dade County and Broward County all are big departments - Miami-Dade is number 1 in size in the state and Palm Beach County is number 2. Palm Beach has no units that start in the 100's although some second rescues in a station have a 0 or a 1 after the two-digit station number, ie. Rescue 23 and 231 in the same station. I'm pretty sure Miami-Dade works about the same way.

Absolutely beautiful Alex! Looks a lot like PBCFR's but a tad bit shorter. Did they get rid of the tractor-trailer SPLOPS unit?

firetrucknut, Some Florida departments use "countywide" numbering systems, others use numerical sequence. Tampa for example goes from Station 1 through Station 22. Hillsborough County which surrounds Tampa used to use a three digit station/unit type system until the early '90's when a new fire chief renumbered the stations, now 1 through 42. Pinellas County uses a countywide numbering system with St. Petersburg being 1-13, some small departments like South Pasadena have only one station, #20, Largo uses 38-43, Clearwater is the second largest department in Pinellas and they are assigned 44-51. This numbering system goes on up to 70 in Tarpon Springs. Post Hurricane Andrew in '92, the state developed a ID system similar to California, to be used on deployments statewide for hurricanes, brush fires etc. Each department was given a community code for use in IDing their rigs. Tampa is TPA, I think Clearwater is CLW, St. Petersburg STP and so on.

Broward county numbers stations and units based on the date the station is put into service.
Dania beach had the first station, so they are 1 with the units being the same. Ft. Lauderdale has station 2 and so on.
I think broward has around 115 stations now, so regardless of whomever builds the next one, they get 116.
If there is a station unit with a 2 in front of it, that usually means an additional truck. Hollywood has station 31, staffed with 2 rescue trucks numbered R31 and R231.

Sarasota County uses a modified countywide numbering system. Sarasota County FD stations are numbered 1-29 with spare/reserve units numbered in the 30's. Within the county are four departments numbered as follows: Nokomis FD -40's, Station#41; Venice FD - 50s, Stations 51,52,53; Englewood FD - 70's, Stations 71,72,73,74,75; North Port FD - 80's, Stations 81,82,83,84,85.

In Miami-Dade County there is no numbering system. Currently, Coral Gables: Sta.1-3, Hialeah: Sta.1-8, Key Biscayne: Sta.1, City of Miami: Sta.1-14, Miami Beach: Sta.1-4 and last but not least, Miami-Dade County: Sta.1-17, Sta.18 (closed), Sta.19-61, Sta.62 (TBA), Sta.63-66, Sta.67 Arcola (proposed), Sta.68 (TBA), Sta.69 Dolphin (proposed), Sta.70 Naranja (proposed) and Sta.73 Fireboat. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue operates 65 built stations across the county, several have temporary company's jointed until their proposed stations are built, for example; Sta.45 in Doral houses E45 and R69 while Sta.50 in Perrine houses R50 and E62 etc.

Hillsborough County is the same as Miami-Dade, in that each of the 4 departments start their numbering from 1. Tampa has Stations 1 to 22, Hillsborough County has stations 1 to 42, and Temple Terrace and Plant City both have Stations 1 and 2. The numbering for the units varies - City of Tampa is straightforward (E1, R1, T1 at Station 1), same for Plant City. Hillsborough County does the same, however there is one station with 2 engines (Engine 14 and Engine 14A)...and Temple Terrace has Station 1 (Engine 11, Rescue 11, Rescue 12), and Station 2 (Engine 21, Ladder 21).
Curiously enough, there is one area of the county where Tampa Engine 21, Temple Terrace Engine 21, and Hillsborough County Engine 21 all have intersecting response areas (I-75/Fletcher Avenue area).
Of course, I'm a proponent of a countywide numbering system. Pinellas County did it in the...80s (?), 90s (?)...and seems to do well with automatic aid, closest-unit response, etc. Those are two separate issues though - numbering and the aid agreements/dispatching. The MABAS system in metro Chicago is interesting...where a handful of small-medium departments band together to form a common dispatch and numbering system (not tied to county boundaries). I think there are at least 3 'sets' of MABAS departments.
