Good question! Ladder 19 may or may not be in service yet, but it wasn't at Motor Squad on Wednesday. The Pierce Enforcers previously assigned to Engines 2, 3, 4, 5 & 41 are scheduled to go out to be refurbished at some point. Not sure if they will be spares or frontline. The only frontline Engines that could stand to be replaced are Engines 16, 20 & 56. All other companies have received either new or refurbished pieces in the last 12yrs. The 12yr old Pierces (Engines 8, 9 & 18) may be getting the refurbished Pierces, but that's just me musing aloud.

Well the upgrades to fleet seem to be going well. How are things with the spare pool skip. Mainly the ladders. I know that was a major issue not very long ago. Also any word on the on again off again rescue replacment. And tower replacement. Thanks.

Spare Ladders are all the old E\-One's. Old L9, L23, L4 & L14 get the most use. Ladder 19's Pierce was back in Motor Squad today so it has NOT gone into service yet. As for what's coming down the Pike..........New KME for Engine 10 with a 2 Stage Pump that will be capable of pumping at greater than 2000gpm (Fall), Two new KME Rearmount TL's (Sometime between June-September), New Rescue (Fall)

I had been, but more likely because the "correct" company didn't get the bid than for budgetary reasons. The Academy Class that was pushed from February to July to November is now back to September.

I haven't heard great things about the pumpers, too many bells & whistles, but the guys seem to like the trucks. I was told that going forward the pumpers will have a LOT less electronics (power windows for example) so that there's less things to break.

Gotta make them "fireman proof".  Despite the bad things and the inevitable pro/con KME argument, the KME's that my department ran have held up rather well considering the abuse that they have taken.  We just disposed of the last 1996 engines, and still have 2 99 engines, a 98 TDA and a 2002 rescue, all in reserve now. Apparatus Update: All info verified as of August 5, 2014.

 

-Mid-point inspection for new Tower Ladder 10 is scheduled in PA within the next 2wks. Delivery scheduled for October. Following delivery TL10's Pierce will be turned over to Rochester MA which purchased it for $75,000.

 

-Last of the 4 KME Rearmount Ladders (First 3 went to Ladders 17, 18 & 29) will be delivered this fall, due to be assigned to Ladder 16. L16's 2008 E\-One will be fitted with "low profile" tires & be reassigned to Ladder 25.

 

-First 3 of the 5 2003 Pierce CAFS Pumpers that were previously assigned to Engines 2, 3, 4, 5 & 41 have returned from being refurbished. They are being reassigned to Engines 30, 20, 50, 55 & 56. E30 & E20 are currently at HQ, E50 is having the scene lights installed, E55 and E56 have not been finished yet.

 

-Engine 10's new KME HP Pumper (Dual Stage Pump, 2000gpm) is due to arrive in the fall. Their 2008 E\-One will most likely be reassigned to Engine 8.

Has any thought been given to putting a new ladder that would fit the door at Ladder 25? I know the current trend in Boston has been to cycle apparatus from busier companies to slower companies after a refurb which I'm sure is a money saver, but I almost feel like a new piece like that new E\-One Metro 100' would do better at Ladder 25 than Ladder 16's piece. Between the regular travel height of about 11' 6" (if I'm not mistaken) and the weight of a double rear axel piece I would think that would be too much for 25's quarters even with the "low profile tires".

Our E\-One's are 11'4" at delivery. My current piece had a channel cut into the roof of the cab & low profile tires put on it to get it down to 10'11" so that we would fit under various bridges on Soldiers Field Road & Storrow Drive. Ladder 15 received the same I believe. Even with that we don't fit into Ladder 25's quarters (the bay door garage door opener gets in the way) & are forced to park next door on McKenna Way when covering. I honestly don't think that Ladder 16 will fit in there even WITH new tires and a lowered suspension. This is going to start becoming a bigger issue because trucks aren't getting smaller & our old houses (E30/L25, built in 1898) aren't getting any larger. There are similar issues at E29/L11, E17/L7, E2/L19, E33/L15, E24/L23, E18/L6 & E49 due to the age of the houses (the most recent of those firehouses was built in 1932, 82 years ago!). Some new or significantly renovated firehouses have to be built. Only 6 new firehouse have built in the past 40 years & the last firehouse the city built was in 1984 (The Big House was built for the city by a developer in 1989 in exchange for the land where the old house sat on Oliver St). There's a lot of positive changes coming in the BFD & I hope updated quarters are among them!

I was told that both that & Tower Ladder 10 are scheduled to be in around the first week of December. Looks like that will be the case.
