District of Columbia Firehouses - Truckman - 11-23-2010

You guys better anchor down the wall TV and other ones, as well as computers, washer and dryer and anything you would like to have there when the companies are out for a while at a job.

They do walk. We have had some sprout legs. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/banghead.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Banghead' />

Looks great. I like the mix of the traditional brass poles and the brass railings around the Watch Desk surrounded by the modern Seagrave rigs and renovated firehouse.

Funny you should mention that because during construction, the night of them placing the new metal gutters, they magically walked off by the morning. Not even 8 hours later. Good old Trinidad.

Question,

I understand that each Company has their separate pole from the second floor. Where does the front pole next to the Watch Desk come from?

Good pictures by the way. Thats a nice looking Station with a lot of tradition.

The pole closest to the Watch Desk is closest to the Officers bunk rooms. It is also closer to some of the members bunks.

What a cool looking station Roy. A nice job was done inside and out by all appearances.

Nice house, Roy!

Is that a scale in the back corner behind the bed?

District of Columbia Firehouses - Guest - 01-29-2013

Yes that is a scale.

Cosgrove can correct me if I'm wrong. I was told they were used to weigh the laundry bins that were sent to the imates at Lorton Prison. Dirty linen from each firehouse was sent to the prison laundry and returned washed, and folded. The prisoner linen service probably stopped in the late 80's. I came on the job in early 91' and the linen service was gone by then.

Since DC is the Federal City, the linen was the same stuff issued to the military.

The laundry bins were metal framed, with canvas sides, and they had wooden skids on the bottom of the laundry bin. If your firehouse had a straight run of stairs it was your duty to ride in the laundry bin from the top of the stairs to the apparatus floor Rolleyes

Thanks, Ron...that is some really interesting information.  BTW, I rode along with RS 1 in DC a few years ago.  Fantastic experience, awesome guys!
