Are they switching the existing fleet to have the new seal, becasue E-4 did not have this seal when it was delivered.

These little critters are the CSU’s: Community Service Units (CSU-5 and 2 shown)
In March 2008 the DCFD organized six 3-man companies whose primary mission is fire hydrant inspection. Washington Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) provided the apparatus, six Chevrolet K3500 trucks, and reimburses the city for half the cost of staffing. Firefighters assigned to CSU test, log and collect hydrant information, as well as identifying defects and GPS information that is transmitted back to WASA as well as the fire department. CSU-1 went in service in March 2008 with a Chevrolet K3500 assigned shop serial S-200.
January 21, 2009 photo, fatal fire at North Capitol and W St. NW, where CSU-1 arrived on the scene at the same time as the first-due engine company as was able to perform a quick removal of one resident.

In addition to their hydrant testing gear, CSU’s carry portable pumps and associated equipment. CSUs deploy on a water main breaks to complete a geographical assessment of the impact area, analyzing the effected area and preparing an operational strategy for Battalion and Division Commanders. Additionally, they liaise with related DC agencies.

February 9, 2009 photo, following a 2nd Alarm at 1200 Delaware Ave SW during which a water feed broke on the 4th floor of a high-rise elderly residence. CSU Co.s 2, 3 and 5 responded to evacuate water and perform other miscellaneous service.

S-202, CSU-3
Same fire as noted above with CSU-2. Some of the miscellaneous services provided by the Community Service Units include delivering bottled water following water main breaks; collecting 4,500 Toys for Tots from firehouses at Christmas (and unloading 25,000 toys at Children’s Hospital!); service at multiple alarm fires and weather related incidents. They are staffed by a sergeant and two firefighters.

S-204, CSU-6
In addition to their myriad assigned duties, CSU’s have been successful in calling in many alarms in the past year and have gone into service on fires and medical alarms, sometimes mitigating the event, and sometimes calling in All the Kings Horses and Men. In 2008 CSUs have been to:
One 5th Alarm (all six units), four 3rd Alarms, twenty-three 2nd Alarms, twenty-nine Working Fire Dispatches, forty-five Box Alarms (5 engines, 2 trucks, 1 rescue squad), nine Water Supply Strike Teams (3 Water Supply engines and a chief), sixty Local Alarms (an alarm less in size than a Box Alarm), and the unreported-to-avoid paperwork episodes.

A little noted, but appreciated function of CSU’s is their blocking traffic at downtown alarms when the police cars are parked, zealously protecting the hydrants. The gentleman walking behind CSU-6 in the above image is Lieutenant Sean Egan (Car 10), the head of the Community Service Units. He graciously provide all the information for the forgoing captions. Take them with a grain of salt. Photo is Dec. 5, 2008, 7th and E St. NW. A fire pump burst following a fire on the 9th floor of the Terrell Building. CSU units pumped out the water.

Mr. CSU Sean Egan, back in The Day. Wagon is one of the original 1980 Hahn wagons, repainted and outfitted with dutch-doors, late 1980's.

All the new apparatus will have them, but some companies went out on there own and bought them.

Don't mean to toot my horn but I just talked to a wagon driver from 12 and they got the door seals about three weeks after we did.
