History of the Atlanta Fire Dept. - GA_Dave - 06-10-2007
In 1987 Atlanta purchased their first apparatus built on Spartan chassis. Four Spartan Monarch/Steeldraulics Products, Inc. (SPI) 1500/500 pumpers were assigned to Engine Companies 12, 17, 27 and 28. They were all replaced and disposed of in 2000.

Here's a shot of Foam 28's 1979 Seagrave PT/1974 National Foam unit. It has been relocated and now runs as Foam 38. The tractor previously pulled Ladder 2's 1966 Pirsch 100' trailer. The trailer's tank carries 700 gallons of foam and has a 30 GPM foam pump. Working with a pumper, the turret can flow 1000 GPM of foam. In addition, the box on the rear of the tractor carries twenty 5-gallon buckets of foam.

Prior to the Seagrave tractor, Foam 28 was pulled by this 1966 Ford C/Pirsch tractor that was previously operated by Ladder 11.

Engine 30 is representative of the fleet of pumpers currently operated by the Atlanta Fire Department. Most of this order of 30 identical Spartan/Quality 1500/500/60F pumpers were delivered in 2000.

In addition to the 30 pumpers and 9 TDA's, Atlanta bought four 2000 Spartan/Ladder Towers, Inc. 90' service aerials and assigned them to Ladder Companies 25, 26, 29 and 31.

Chief Rubin is being Chief Rubin up here in D.C. Had two very significant fires iin his first week. Hopefully he will get this best out of DCFD. Quite a challenge, but seems to have support of the new mayor and the troops. You know at one time he was a DC jake.
Can we get details on how Quint 4 works and responds? Is it still in service, even though FDFC seems to be being decimated by annexation?
Great sight. Spent many nights at #4,6 and 11. Old 11 had to have the skinniest pole I ever slid. Loved riding with Budd Rice, E.O. MacDonnel, Foy Chapman and of course the greatest B/C of all times whose name excapes me. It was jack something and he was actually assigned to the 6th Battalon but usually rode 901 out of Ellis St.

That's what I heard also from an E\-One dealer at FRE who lives in the Atlanta area. Said the department really liked it after one came through and made a stop in Atlanta. He said he thought they would have one on order before long (that was back in Jan).

If you have more, would it be possible to post them? I know it sounds stupid to post all 4 of the same rigs from the same order of, say 4. But I like the differences the companies and shops make over time to each one in different ways as well as the company patches.

GA DAVE, I may be wrong but I think I know where one of these type of trucks are. Morristown, Tennessee Fire Dept has a truck that looks just like this. Do you know off hand how many of these trucks that Grumman built. I don't think this one in Morristown is an ex-Atlanta truck cause it has this rear mounted pump in it. But it looks just like the truck in the above picture. I haft to go up there and shoot it next time i'm up that way.

Here's more info and some answers to all the questions:
I managed to get out and shoot the new Air 7 and Engine 36 today. E-36 is running with the 1997 Spartan/Quality 1500/500 that was formerly assigned to Engine 21 and is a twin to the Engine 38 posted above (I was wrong about it being a 1996, it's a '97). They are located in temporary quarters behind the West Atlanta School on Kimberly Road, just south of Cascade Road.
I have not heard any official word on the new Ladder 11, except that it will be a platform.
Quint 4 is NOT a Fulton County rig, it belongs to the City of Sandy Springs. It's a 2006 Pierce Dash 2000/500/105' rearmount. Former FCFD Stations 6, 2, 22 and Atlanta Station 39 (FCFD E-4) are now Sandy Springs Stations 1, 2, 3 and 4, in that order. Since it runs in Atlanta, I probably should include it. Give me a few minutes, I'll have to dig it out and scan it.
I plan to post everything I have, but it will take time. Since many of the rigs are identical except the company number, I only shot a representative example.
I don't know where all of the Grumman towers went. One did end up in Connecticut. The Morrisville, TN rig is NOT one of them. I can't give exact numbers as to how many were built, but there were quite a few. Some had pumps, some didn't.

Is 36 an Atlanta company? If so is it jsut an additonal compay due to growth. Sounds like they will be in the 9-38-31-25 are of the fourth battalion.
I have tons of Atlanta fire and apparatus pictures (slides) from the late 70's and the late 80's but no talent what so ever to get them on a post such as this.

The 1998 Spartan/Quality's were the last pumpers delivered to Atlanta before the large contract in 2000. They differed from earlier units in that they had high-side compartments on both sides with an overhead hydraulic ladder rack and they also had a different warning light package.

Yes, Atlanta is annexing to the west, taking in territory formerly covered by Fulton County FD. It is projected that Engine 36 will eventually move into the current FCFD Station 23 on Cascade Road, once FCFD leaves it.

This is one of the better ones.
Hewlett Packard 4070. It does a great job on Slides, Prints and Negatives.
