I cannot imagine being the driver/operator and have that damn light flashing in my face all the time at the bottom of the panel...might cause a seizure!! That seems like it would be very user UN-friendly, not only that but being blocked by hoses hanging and the operator standing in front of it.

YIKES!!!

Chicago Fire Department - Guest - 08-20-2012

If its flashing in your face your pretty short.

You mean all you guys are not 3 feet tall like me??

Seriously, you know what I mean, those damn LED's are bright!

Chicago Fire Department - Guest - 08-21-2012

They're probably on a "Cut~out/off" pressure switch connected to the Pump/Transfer Case .

ALF only owns the rights to the Snorkel Name. Another company can simply build the aerial and of course name it something else.(RE the Pierce Aerial Tower) Even better if they make their own minor design change. (a patent loop hole) Also I would like to guess that the Snorkel Patent has long since expired, like the Foam pump designed by National Foam that you now see E-1 and Pierce build. Did I hear that NF gave up apparatus production?

Other copies in the industry that I can think of:

The Cincinnati cab (by Hahn)

The Hahn 92' cab(by Ottawa)

The Grove/LTI Aerial Tower (By Pierce, Smeal, Grumman etc.)

Baker Aerial Scope (by Baker)

The Tele-Squirt (also by Redi-Tower)
Heard a rumor from someone in the industry that the next Chicago two-piece squad companies will not have snorkel booms but elevated water ways similar to a telesqurt. Anyone else hear this?

Chicago Fire Department - ACPD227 - 08-22-2012

That would be a shame not sure why they dont refurb the booms and place them on new trucks they have spare ones dont they?

if I remember correctly, there were two seats, one on each side on the rear of this rig, leaving the FF's to the elements outside while on calls......anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this
There is a video on Youtube that briefly shows the guys riding on the rear of the truck:

It's around the 5:15 minute mark but worth watching the whole thing!

Further investigation makes me believe this may not be the case. Rumors...

If you look at the City of Chicago Master Buying Plan/Contracting Opportunities, there is a Snorkel Squad listed. The big question remains, will the CFD get what they requested? Others on another site have speculated that a Sutphen mini tower or even a small Bronto could be a suitable replacement for the Snorkel. It will be interesting to see what the dept actually ends up with.

My money says what they'll end up with will come out of nowhere, if that makes sense...

Not to be picky...but there is no such thing as a "Sutphen mini tower". Doesn't seem like a straight platform would fit what they need anyway.

I disagree. Back in the early days of Sutphen's 65', twin bucket aerial platforms, they were marketed as "Mini-Towers". The 65' and 75' aerials were called "Fireballs". Those names are no longer in use by Sutphen, but they were back then.

Chicago Fire Department - ACPD227 - 08-30-2012

Not to hi jack the thread here is the suphten mini tower

Chicago Fire Department - ACPD227 - 08-30-2012

Better shot of rear

Chicago Fire Department - Guest - 08-31-2012

I've always though the Sutphen "mini towers" were neat rigs, Woburn, MA not far from me once ran one. As stated above, I do not believe Sutphen manufactuers such a rig anymore.

Chicago Fire Department - J. Dexter - 08-31-2012

CFD Tower Ladder 37 - on the apron of the 55th Street Station earlier this year...

Sorry, I probably should have been more specific...There is no CURRENT such thing as a Sutphen mini tower.
