According to the most recent FAJ (Sept-Oct) the bid came back in mid-June on the Snorkel Squad apparatus. They only had one bidder for both the 55 foot platform and a rescue squad and it was from Rosenbauer.

That's our SP70, just a single axle version of its big brothers. Not a big deal to me, but Drew Sutphen tends to get a little "bent" when the words "mini tower" is mentioned.

If Rosenbauer got the bid I am thinking it will be a Roadrunner 68 footer.
Did a little digging and found some options, I think the Boomer would be as good choice.

I fail to see how any of these apparatus would be a viable Snorkel replacement. I believe that the true value of the Snorkel in Chicago is its articulation. Historically, much has been mentioned about the usefulness of the Snorkel in rescue situations in Chicago, its ability to go up and over items such as the elevated transit tracks in the city. I can't see that the purpose of the Snorkel squad is for use as an elevated master stream or small ladder. The snorkel has its roots in Chicago and they use these trucks in a specific way that I am sure has been honed in the 50 plus years the city has used these devices. Perhaps any Rosenbauer bid was for the T-rex articulating unit? It is a shame that ALF is still twitching, if they finally just died perhaps someone could pick up the pieces and market some of the devices that ALF owns and make them again, I think there is value in the Snorkel product, as well as LTI. The extended hospice stay for ALF has not served these products well.

Yep, this sounds so familiar. American Lafrance comes back into the market balls to the wall, buys the rights to several well known fire service names, declares bankruptcy, leaving every city and town that purchased the ALF line hold their ass. Just my two cents.....

I agree that there is just no substitute or an equivalent for how Chicago has historically used the Snorkel. The question will be does Chicago want a device capable of rescue and how maneuverable will it be...or will they be fine with a "rescue truck with an elevated WATERWAY?" This dilemna (thanks to ALF) and what happens with the FDNY pumper contract seem to be the most interesting apparatus stories in quite some time.
For the record, I do wish ALF would just go away, LOL. As mentioned, ALF hasn't truly existed since the early 1980s. The Kersey ALFs that followed were okay. But, Hebe's ALF just starting piling up the train cars that has become the current train wreck it is. That man also nearly killed Seagrave...and ulitmately may have, if things continue...

A lot of speculation here. All someone needs to do is look at the bid responses Chicago received back, I'm sure the bid specifications spell out what each manufacturer was supplying.
There is nothing preventing a manufacturer from designing, certifying, building, and marketing a new "multiple equal length sectioned articulating rescue and firefighting aerial device" if they wished........

- my guess is they are going to find someone to refurb the snorkle booms and or try to purchase used one in good condition,they do exsist. the snorkle has a purpose on the fireground that no other aerial device can do and that is the reason they use them. Just wait and see what happens.

The Rosenbauer truck looks just like the current Snorkels. I don't know who is building the boom, but I may be able to find a drawing of the proposed unit.

I agree with Truck61 refurbishment is a great alternative for the Snorkel. it would be hard to replicate unless they are designing a close altnitive as some manfactures have doen in the past. I always have been a fan of Snorkels. Although not for every department they fit a special need in the fire service. It always disturbs me to drive by the old Snorkel plant in Elwood, Kansas across the river from St. Joe, Missouri and the Old Snorkel repair refurbishment facility in St. Joe. Remembering that all Snorkels, Tele-Squirts, and Squirts prior to the ALF takeover were built and mounted on chassie in Grandview, Missouri a Kansas City Surburb and later in Elwood, Kansas/ St. Joe, Missouri.

For Rescue 3 in Memphis, they did a refurb of an old Snorkel that was sitting at the shops. Pierce mounted the Snorkel on a new chassis and body and after getting some bugs worked out, it appears to be working fine. That is certainly an option.

This is the same thing we did with the snorkel in my pic. We took our 1971 boom to Pierce and they refurbbed it and put it on a new chassis in 2003. We had to work out bugs as well but it is fine now. Rescue 3 boom gets raised more than ours but I know ours gets raised and operated every three days on each shifts first day back and it still works like a champ .
