Dundalk, MD 3rd Alarm - 7/27/13 - Guest - 07-28-2013

Shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 27th, Baltimore County (MD) eastside fire units were dispatched to the vacant Seagram's plant in the 7100 block of Sollers Point Road in Dundalk for a reported building fire. This complex has been the site of multiple previous fires. BCoFD Engine 6 (Dundalk station) arrived with heavy fire showing from multiple floors and immediately requested a second alarm. A civilian was reported trapped in the building but jumped from the 3rd floor, they were transported with serious injuries to an area hospital. Firefighters encountered water problems and a collapse of part of the building, command ordered exterior operations. At the height of the fire, three ladder pipes were used to combat the flames and embers that were threatening exposures. Command eventually requested a third alarm assignment, and units from Baltimore City Fire Department responded on mutual aid.

This continues the tradition of at least one multiple-alarm fire in the region during the Firehouse Expo.  I was glad to buff this one with my Dad, a Fire Bell Club of New York board member who was visiting for the weekend.

We got there about 30 minutes into the call ...

Great shots! As soon as I heard them call Truck 15 and told them prepare to copy a building fire at Seagrams I knew that was going to be the multiple alarm fire. Streak continues! LoL

Since the NJ State Firemen's Association moved its convention to Wildwood from Atlantic City in 1975, there has been a number of years with multiple alarm fires during that weekend often destroying one of the Boardwalk landmarks.   This doesn't happen every year but it has happened a lot.  Unfortunately in the years when there is no big fire there is often another tragedy such as a drowning in the ocean.   Then there are those weekends when there are neither but the weekend falls during something like Hurricane Floyd in 1999 or the same week as 9/11/2001.

BTW, since I've never been to the Firehouse Expo not even when it was close by in Philadlephia in the early 80's, I am curious as to how many people attend it.   I know that the Lancaster County Fire Expo at Harrisburg usually has 20,000 + admissions during its 3 day run each May.   Our convention often attracts 25,000 people who are there from Thursday afternoon to Sunday morning.
