Trucks that are cross-staffed - Juice - 12-09-2012 Hey gang, in regards to departments that cross staff trucks, such as; A haz mat truck stationed at (station 1) is manned by 2 guys from station 1, 1 guy from station 2, and 1 guy from station 3. When a call goes out for the haz mat truck, how do most departments respond with the guys from stations 2 and 3? Do you take an entire truck out of service because 1 guy steps off? Do the remaining guys on the engine get assigned something on the scene until all members are back together? The reason I ask this, is I learned recently of a department (18 stations) that has a dive unit at HQ. 1 member from several engines will meet at HQ upon a water rescue dispatch, and while they're gone, that engine still runs, just 1 man less. Last question, what happens if there is a contract with the city saying staffing is (X amount of guys) per truck, and that number can't be met when another truck is being cross staffed? Thanks for any answers, Trav! Trucks that are cross-staffed - ACPD227 - 12-27-2012 I think the same department does the same for dive, haz-mat, and sort calls. Most of the time the closest chief picks up several guys and responds. Trucks that are cross-staffed - Juice - 12-30-2012 Hey, you seem to know what department I'm talking about Jason! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I forgot about S.O.R.T. calls! I know that one day I was at St. 14, and the guys from 15 were already picking their staff up from St. 1, so they courtesy transported 14's guy back after a Dive training. Thanks for the info, now I wonder what happens when you find yourself under minimal staffing? Trav! Trucks that are cross-staffed - Guest - 01-04-2013 This may be different than your original post, but it is an interesting variation. Portland (OR) station 31 is on the west side of 174th Ave. The street divides the cities of Portland and Gresham. The station and apparatus are owned by Portland, but on B shift it is manned by Gresham firefighters. A and C shifts have Portland crews. An interesting twist is that Gresham normally runs 3-man crews, but they must run a 4-man crew on Portland Eng. 31. On a Haz Mat call, both companies are placed out of service. Six people man the Haz Mat unit and the other two man the State Decon rig. Station 6 has three boats, station 17 has two boats and station 21 has one boat. Station 22 is several blocks from the Willamette river and it has a small boat on a trailer. PDX (Portland Int'l Airport) has a boat on the Columbia river that responds on many calls with Portland's boats. All the boats are cross-manned with engine companies. They take the engine or a boat.
