This truck just joined the family officially over the weekend, after running since day 1 out of Downey, California's Station 1. (The original factory photo is posted here, over in the tiller pics, even.) 27 years since it went in service, she still chugged the 220 miles home along Interstate 5 like a champ despite it being seemingly all uphill and toasty outside (mid to high 90s on the thermometer). A fun drive, and hardly any sunburn at all. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

The quasi-modernization retrofit is planned for the fall, to include new decals, reflective striping, replacing the strobes with LED warning lights (per current NFPA zone lighting) and re-loading equipment that would be found on such an apparatus.

As seen while still in service at a high school fire in 1999:

Saw this rig on Ebay a few months ago. Is it being put back into frontline service, or gonna be used as a parade piece?

I too saw this rig. I would have bid on it had it not been on the other end of the earth from me. Nice looking rig!

A very nice ride. Who built the trailer and did the body work on this?

1982 Mack CF LTI Tiller (ex Downey, CA) - Guest - 10-04-2009

Is this privately owned or did a Fire Department buy it?

It joined the current "family" in March 2009, and is currently being re-marked (both graphics and the reflective striping). It becomes one of a few privately owned tillers in California, and as near as we can tell, the only one you can order up for a private event, function, parade use or movie prop. (There's a few in Southern California that are movie-industry focused, but in its home in Northern California, it's primarily a parade and show rig now).

And yes on the ladder -- it's a LTI 106-foot model. The body work was done by Conestoga Custom Products of Ephrata, PA in March 1983.

paul@firetrucks4hire.com

This tiller is still for sale. The owners are willing to take 7,500 . As the former owner of the only other mack cf tiller left, i sure hope someone will buy it and give it a good home. It will be listed on Spammfaa and any interested parties can email the owner paul@firetrucks4hire.com I did check and it would cost roughly 3-4k to drive it to the east coast .

1982 Mack CF LTI Tiller (ex Downey, CA) - Roto-Ray - 01-28-2013

If memory serves me correctly, this tiller is now in Mexico.

1982 Mack CF LTI Tiller (ex Downey, CA) - Guest - 01-28-2013

Wow. Then the Allentown cf is the only one left from what I've heard. Of the 29 is there any others left????

The Mack/LTI from Talleyville Del. that was sold to Baltimore County was sent to auction and last seen a few years ago rotting away in a salvage yard. The Mack/Maxim (I think) from Anne Arundle county was junked several years ago.

Maybe I missed it, but what happened to Dekalb County Ga's CF Tiller(s)...?  I think they were LTI as well.  One was displayed years ago at Dutch Wonderland when the Lancaster County Fire Expo was held out there, before moving to Harrisburg....

Thanks,

Gary

I can confirm that AA County's CF Tiller/Maxim (later refurbed by Hamerly) was indeed in the junkyard on Route 309 in Quakertown Pa. about 4 +/- years ago, in fact I think I may even have posted a pic or two of it on here (maybe in "Relics"???) It is no longer there, I was told it was cut up for scrap.
