OK then. I was given some bad information when I took the shot. I was told that the boat was built in 1962 for the FDNY and was named after a NY City Councilman.

I believe that it was bought by the DCFD in 1977. I did find that Senator Glenn's full name IS John Herschel Glenn, Jr. The boat must have been re-named when it came to DC. BTW, Sen. Glenn was born in Cambridge, Ohio and is yet another great BUCKEYE!

The boat was named for John Glenn by FNDY when it was built. A DCFD official told me when they got it that they would rename it so that the other 99 senators wouldn't be jealous but that never happened.

What year is the current rig assigned to Engine Co. 23? How many were in that order?

Thanks.

DCFD Photos, old or new - dcfireman - 10-23-2007

Engine 23 is one of eleven Seagrave wagons received by the DCFD in 2006. Powered by a Detroit 60, is has a two-stage Waterous 1250 gpm pump and a 500-gallon tank. I have no good photo the new E-23 to share, but I caught the identical E-08 on the fireground. These wagons are distinguished from the sixteen previous Seagraves by their short doors.

I'll do some sorting and post more in a day or two. 2007 photo

DCFD Photos, old or new - Guest - 10-23-2007

The 2005 Seagrave order included ENGINE Co. 10's S-160, they were a substantial improvement from the previous Seagraves and Apparatus the DCFD had purchased as these were the one of the first batch of Engines with the 60 Series Detriot Engine and Allison EVS 4000 series transmission. The previous wagons had the smaller 40 series Detroit engine and Allison EVS 3000 series transmission that was ok, however, the new wagons were made for city driving.

The doors is one of the biggest difference in the 2005 and 2006 batch. Also the 2006 Seagrave and according to the DCFD all future apparatus shall be constructed of Stainless Steel, both the cab and the body. That is why the S.S. turned up in the shop numbers to identfy which pieces are constructed from Stainless Steel. Engine Co. 10 is S-160, where is Engine 8 is S-??? S.S.

DCFD Photos, old or new - Guest - 10-23-2007

The same S-160 just a good picture that shows the house. Engine Co. 10 and Truck Co. 13 affectionately nick-named the "HOUSE OF PAIN' due to the high number of runs out of the house.

Here is a picture of Engine 23 that I took summer of this year.

One correction, the 'previous wagons' you mention in your first paragraph had 50 series engines.

The serial number on the newest Seagraves, which are stainless steel, is located under the headlights on the left side of the cab (right side if you are looking at the cab).

DCFD Photos, old or new - Guest - 10-24-2007

Here are some pics of the serial number on the new DC Seagrave engines. This is of E-7 (S-168).

The first is the front of the cab.

DCFD Photos, old or new - Guest - 10-24-2007

This pic is a close up of the serial number under the front headlight.

Maybe this has been covered previously and I don't remember but why did DCFD order a split order of Pierce and Seagrave pumpers a number of years back?

Because our chief at the time, Ronnie Few, liked Pierce from his relationship with them at his former place of employment. There was actually one member of the senior FD staff who wanted to split the order 3 ways between EOne, Pierce, and Seagrave. Luckily he didn't get his way as the EOnes were pure junk then. The Pierces were a good quality piece, the only problem with them is that the interior space in the crew cab was not sufficient. Seagrave was preferred by the 'end users', and Seagrave gave us the best of both worlds in that they were a quality piece, but also had sufficient room in the cabs.

Let me add to this . The order was for 6 Seagraves, 6 Pierces, 6 E-Ones with an add on of 2 more.

Well the Apparatus Deputy retired and aNew one was appointed. This is the Chief that is responsible for the spec's we have today <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/luxhello.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Luxhello' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hail.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Hail' /> . He called E\-One and told em they didn't meet the spec. ie low cross lays and hose beds. Long story short . Seagrave got the oder for 8 more for a total of 14. The rest is history.

Sounds like smart specs! Love the low hose beds that those trucks have!
