DCFD Photos, old or new - SrFireOfficial - 06-30-2009 I saw the new DCFD Battalion Chief 1 car today in front of E17 on Monroe Street. I know it's not as sporty as a big old (or new) DCFD Seagrave but anybody snag a pic of it yet? DCFD Photos, old or new - dcfireman - 07-18-2009
Elevated shot of E-27 (S-171) on Minnesota Ave. N.E. 2006/2008 Seagrave.
Thanks for the nice pic of E-27, RMKDFD. I’ve always had an affinity for that house and you’ve given me an excuse to post some old snapshots and share some history. Chemical Co. No. 1 was organized in 1908 at 4201 Minnesota Ave NE, Whittingham, DC. In 1914 the company traded one of it’s two chemical wagons for a steamer and was reorganized as Engine Co. No. 27. This image shows the house in the early 1990’s. The wagon on the left stenciled E-27 was the regular piece, temporarily out of service. The one on the right with the paper numbers was a reserve Hahn in service as E-27 that day. DCFD Photos, old or new - dcfireman - 07-18-2009 Engine 27 in quarters, 1991. During the year prior to disbanding the pumpers in January, 1992, E-27 ran with a Ford/ E\-One wagon and, on this day, a Ford/ Young/ Ward LaFrance pumper in lieu of a Hahn. Ironically, the Pepsi machine had been removed from its berth beneath the Safe Place sign after several vandalisms. DCFD Photos, old or new - dcfireman - 07-18-2009 In this July 1991 image Engine 27’s pumper (S-161) is running with a 1983 Hahn. It’s located on the plug at 34th and M Sts. SE, pumping to the wagon over at 33rd Pl. and Loud Pl., working a vacant two-story frame. DCFD Photos, old or new - dcfireman - 07-18-2009 E-27’s Hahn was the last of twenty-two Hahn wagons bought by the DCFD, one of five with 82/94-style flared cabs. In the middle 1980’s it was painted in the stars and bars color scheme of that era by the Apparatus Division. In 1990 it is on one of its final runs as 27’s wagon, extinguishing a classic case of heat, fuel, and oxygen gone awry in the 3900 block of Burns Pl. SE. DCFD Photos, old or new - dcfireman - 07-18-2009 Burns Pl. (previous post) was one of a handful of un-maintained “abandoned” streets lined with vacant buildings in southeast DC. Ward 7 had lost some 30% of its population through the 80’s and 90’s. This image was shot from the wagon looking up the street to the 1974 Sutphen pumper, extinguishing a separate minor nuisance fire. 1990 image DCFD Photos, old or new - dcfireman - 07-18-2009 Engine 27 at 49th St. and Sheriff Rd. NE in the waning days of the two-piece company. The 1983 Hahn has been relegated to pumper status, trailing a 1990 Ford/ E\-One. July, 1991 image. DCFD Photos, old or new - dcfireman - 07-18-2009 A frigid day in January 1994. E-27 is running reserve wagon S-143 (ex-E-09), an original 1980 Hahn. The ’80 Hahns proved to be very durable, outlasting some apparatus that succeeded them. This image was the “before” of a before/ after series; the members were sure the water on the apparatus floor would turn to ice. Maybe that’s why the wagon has chains on the wheels. DCFD Photos, old or new - Guest - 07-18-2009 Great stories/history! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/popcorn.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> DCFD Photos, old or new - Guest - 07-18-2009
Engine 27 at 49th St. and Sheriff Rd.
