3-alarm Tanker Fire - Portland 12-13-2015 - Guest - 12-14-2015 Around 0950 on a quiet Sunday morning, Portland Dispatch began receiving calls for a large fire on St. Helens Road. As Engine and Truck 22 left quarters they reported a large column of smoke. When they arrived it appeared that a train of tank cars was burning. It was later determined that a tank truck hauling flammable fuel had left the highway, plunged down the banking beside the train and burst into flame. Although the rail cars contained hot asphalt, they remained intact and did not burn. 5 or 6 cars were heavily damaged and 2 or 3 others were damaged. The last photo shows what remained of the tank truck. Having personal experience with an accident like this, the driver being lost seems to be the trend. Very sad.    Great work by the Department though and a good thing the tank cars remained intact. Anyone know what is in the tank farm on the other side of the train? That could have been alot worse. Thank the lord it was only asphalt in the rail cars.
