California - Northern and Central small cities - Image7801 - 10-13-2015

I didn't find any forum topic about small California cities north of metro L.A., so I thought I'd start one.

Monterey is located about an hour and a half southwest of San Jose, on the coast.  They operate from six stations with six engines, one truck, one rescue, a fireboat and two ARFF rigs.

Monterey Engine 2 (6412) is a 2002 Spartan Gladiator SS/Hi-Tech 1500/500/30b

Monterey Engine 6 (6416) is a Pierce Arrow XT PUC (sorry, no specs), based at the Monterey Peninsula Regional Airport.

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a small, wealthy community just south of Monterey.  Their Department was absorbed into the Monterey FD sometime in the recent past, as far as I can tell.  The only rig I could catch there is an older Ford E-350/Wheeled Coach Ambulance, parked on the street.  I believe this is their second-out rig, as the primary ambo was parked in one of the bays.  There was literally no where to park within several blocks of the station, so I couldn't actually get TO the station, just drive by.

Whats the deal with the plug and wire running up the side of the box? Is there a solar unit up there used for charging?

Thanks for sharing

I think it just goes over the top of the box and plugs into an outlet on/in the station. It probably goes overhead to either avoid a tripping hazard or the cord is too short...

Wow.  They get to drive an engine 400 miles for a funeral?

Seems awful far.  Who pays for the fuel?

Who really cares? Dont see how its any different than any other dept paying respect to the fallen. Had type one engines from nor cal during the memorial for the yarnell 19. Thats far more than 400 miles....

Im with SFFD and we take ours down to services in Southern California almost as often as theres a LODD. The Dept covers the fuel and we volunteer to go. If theres no issues backfilling the rig were taking with a relief, I dont see an issue with it.
