As I was heading to get some badly needed fuel, I noticed a black plume about a mile east of work. So, I headed that way just as Engine 191 went by me. CAD said a "Tree Fire" at 73rd Dr & Cheryl Dr, with Engine 191 assigned.

Engine 191 is just pulling up. Somehow it looks slightly bigger than a tree...

I parked down the block because I didn't want to get blocked in, because it was looking bigger by the minute...

Two things told me it wasn't getting better...and that it definitely wasn't a tree:

1) The plume got a LOT bigger in the two minutes after Engine 191 got on scene

2) CAD now said "Structure Fire - Houses x2" and suddenly the whole world was responding:

Engines:

96, 98 - Phoenix recruit "jump" engines (I don't think they ever made it on scene), 101 - North Valley FD (Sun City West); 150, 151, 152, 154, 157, 158 - Glendale; 191 (1st due), 193, 194 - Peoria; 1099 - ??

Ladders:

191 (1st due) - Peoria; 152, 155, 157 - Glendale; 131 - Sun City

Battalion Chiefs:

Battalion 191 (1st due); 192 - Peoria; 131 - Sun City; 151 - Glendale; 121 - El Mirage; Battalion 3 - Phoenix; South Deputy - Phoenix; West Deputy - Glendale; Car 1928 - Peoria Command Officer

Safety Officers:

Car 957 South - Phoenix; Car 957 North - Phoenix

Special Units:

Rehab 1 - Phoenix, CRV (Command Van) - Phoenix, Utility 159 (Air/Light) - Glendale

Ambulances:

PMT-194 - Peoria

Here's how it looked at it's biggest:

Battalion 191 arriving as Engine 191's Engineer pulls a supply line. As it was initially a single engine response, there was a delay getting everybody rolling after Engine 191 went on scene.

Right after that the P.D. started buttoning down the streets and it was too hot to be on foot. So, I settled for a few more quick shots.

Starting to get water on it...

Last one - Ladder 131 rolling in 12 minutes after Engine 191 arrived on scene. But hey, they were only the 5th or 6th due ladder...

I would rather see the fire than apparatus.

Great recap and unit rundown!

Yeah, I know, but I honestly couldn't get any closer. It was too hot, too much traffic, PD had everything locked down so I gave up trying to get close.

Sorry to disappoint. I'll try harder next time; or simply not bother

Here's a photo of the house that was burning. I found out that it was only one house on fire that was impinging on the one next door. Sorry, no visible fire, though.

How do you receive the CAD in your vehicle?

Phoenix makes most CAD info available on the web. https://htms.phoenix.gov/publicweb/Default.aspx

It doesn't show everything (no medicals, unless they're major incidents), but accidents, fires, hazard calls are on there.

That's good. Is it real time or delayed?

It's very slightly time delayed, as the radio traffic comes out ahead. But only a minute or two. Not sure if it's intentional or just a function of the technology.

Can you tell me more about the recruit jump engines?

I was going to ask the same thing.

I don't know a lot about them, except that they are Phoenix engines that are manned by "red shirt" recruits (probably with a career Captain and Engineer) who "jump" calls around the city in order to get real life experience. Glendale does the same thing with their two medic units who are staffed by Glendale Fire and Southwest ambulance paramedics and paramedic students from one of the local universities.
