Hazel Park, MI Tanker Explosion 7-15-08

On Wednesday July 15th 2009, The Hazel Park Fire Department responded to Northbound I-75 at 9 Mile road for a vehicle accident with a tanker that exploded. Upon arrival a fuel tanker was found under the 9 Mile Bridge fully involved. Hazel Park FD requested Mutual Aid from Ferndale, Madison Heights and Royal Oak Fire Departments. The OAKWAY HAZMAT team was also activated for this incident. The 9 Mile Bridge completely collapsed from this incident. I-75 has been shut down indefinitely as a result of this incident.

Took buffing to a new level...I watched it on the I75 traffic cam. The accident occurred probably 100 yards from camera.

So just curious is that freeway back open again, do they have all the bridge picked up. also how long did it take for them to extinguish this inferno. Thanks

Great photos. From the photos everyone had their hands full!



Also from the news reports the bridge fell and as when most do this, it will be some time before a new one can be built and that road opened again.

Freeway Both Northbound and Southbound will remain closed indefinitely due to the damage to the road surface and the collopsed overpass.... No Fatals just minor injury, The fire burn for about 3 hours before is was brought under control most of it just burned out.
