Headed home from my Quarterly Fire Service Training Commission meeting at KU Fire Rescue Training. Bang Box alarm at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for a roof fire. No Fire but got some shots of Ladder 2. Ladder 2 is filling for Ladder 5 currently.

I have a question for one of the KC guy's (Rick). I am a bit confused about one of the KCMO Pierce Towers. I know one is assigned to T-13 @ Sta 39. Is the other one assigned to T-15 or T-8, and what station would that be. Also, is the High Rise unit assigned to Station 8?

Thanks

The 2 Pierce Towers are assigned to Trucks 8 & 13. You're right Truck 13 is out of 39s with Pumper 39. They cover Kaufmann(KC Royals) and Arrowhead (KC Chiefs) Stadiums which are on the East side of the city and Truck 8 is housed at Station 41 with Pumper 41 on the south end of the city. High Rise 102 is housed at Station 7 near downtown with Pumper 9 & Truck 6. I believe Pumper 9 has the responsibilities over High Rise 102 but if they're out of the house Im sure Truck 6 can pull it. Truck 15 was rolling around in a E\-One tower but I had heard its been wrecked. I think Rick has more info on that.

Yep supposedly all of the Companies in Battalion 102 (2) are able to operate the unit thus the named Highrise 102. Like Eric said Pumper 9 is the responsible company.

The department instituted a new light duty policy that states all light duty personnel will be distributed on unstaffed company's in order of importance. The first position filled is a second person for Air-Light 1 at 47's then a Driver for Foam Tanker 1 at 27's with HM71 them Command 1 at 47's. At some point on the list Highrise 102 gets a driver. Its a great system better than going to your assigned fire house for twenty-four hours and sitting. The list covers everything from Air 1 all the way to the Brush Buggy's. For the firemen that cant drive they go to Fire Alarm or Fire Marshal or Fire Headquarters.

Truck 15's E\-One Cyclone II (Demo) 95ft Tower Ladder is the KCFD model done by code-three. So why is that important because this rig has been to say the least very problematic from the factory to the firemen. This was the Truck that was shot up a few years ago on an alarm and repaired. At some point last week it was driven under a low bridge and the bed section was crush and split apart. The mechanic believes its in the neighborhood of 180k. So we will see what happens to it, they are currently running a Reserve Rescue with ground ladders or as I call it a City Service Truck. Truck 15 runs from 36's with Pumper 36 and Car 107 at 99th and Holmes. They have a nice new two story fire house with brass poles.

Stay Safe,

Rick

During 2006 newly appointed Fire Chief Mark Bradford decided to return the Lawrence, Kansas Fire Department to the proper color. Although a Quint and not a traditional Engine or Truck this unit holds the special title of FIRST RED Fire unit for Lawrence, Kansas Fire Department in Twenty-Eight years. Lawrence moved away from Traditional Red in 1978 in favor of American LaFrance Green or Lawrence Green. Soon Quint 1 will be assigned a new Traditional Engine and this Quint will be reassigned to Quint 3. This will make the entire front line fire fleet white over red. Lawrence Fire Department protects the Famous Kansas Jayhawk at the University of Kansas.

Olathe, Kansas is yet another Metro Fire Department to return to Traditional Solid Red from White over Red. The last Solid Red units purchased were two 1979 Pierce Arrow Engines. Recently Engine 54's white top was repainted red. I prefer Solid Red or Black over Red.

Hi Larry

I put the staffing numbers are in the (). Fire units have Captains and Ladder/Rescue 5 and all Medic's have Lieutenants. The firemen are a mix of Fireman and Engineer.

Fire House 1 built 1950 with two brass fire poles downtown

Quint 1 (three), Medic 1 (two) and Tender 1 (cross-staffed), Engine 7 (Reserve)

Fire House 2 third relocation 2004 east side

Quint 2 (three), Medic 2 (two) and Ladder 2 (Reserve)

Fire House 3 built 1967 northwest side

Quint 3 (three), Medic 3 (two) and water rescue units

Fire House 4 second relocation 2006 west side

Quint 4 (three), Medic 4 (two) and Quint 40 (Reserve)

Fire House 5 and Fire Headquarters built 2005 edge of KU Campus

Engine 5 (three), Ladder 5/ Rescue 5 (three-four), Medic 5 (two), Chief 6 (Div Chief), Haz-Mat 5 (cross-staffed), Quint 50 (Reserve), Battalion 1 (Reserve).

Fire House 11 residential home occupied 1997 Baldwin City, Kansas 30 min south of Lawrence

Medic 11 (two)

Original Fire House 2 built 1928 is now Fire Investigation. Has one steel fire pole

Investigation Truck

Second Fire House 2 built 1967 is now Fire Academy and Shops.

Original Fire House 4 built 1982 is used by LPD and also houses the 1955 ALF 700 Series. Has one Brass fire pole. The pole originally came from the 1928 Fire House 2.

Fire House 5 is the hub center of the city that is why Engine 1 and Ladder 1 were relocated in 2005 when five opened. The idea is that every fire will get one engine, one ladder, two quints, and the division chief. When Chief 6 the Division Chief is off on vac a Captain rides as Acting Div Chief and is called Battalion 1.

Stay Safe Brother,

Rick
