Boston EMS

I took this shot of A16 during my trip to Boston in August 2005 - had a great time there.

Just curious. I've noticed on the photos of the spare ambulances they have the LED numberboard on the boxes. Is this just on the spares or are they going to outfit all the ambulances with the option? I actually think its a cool idea either way.

as a long time paramedic in Ohio and West Virginia. I have too say I wish more places would adopt this mind set Boston EMS has. I cant count how many times I've crossed state lines to "assist" a W.Va. BLS squad sitting 5 minutes from thier local ED! Or meet a W.Va. or Ohio BLS squad enroute to our ED 5 mins away! These EMT's in our areas are trained not to think. If its dyspnea or chest pain then by god we need ALS! Never mind I can see the hospital from where I'm sitting.

Unfortunately, the 1994 DOT EMT-B curriculum (referred to as the dumbed down version by many Instructors, including myself) places an emphasis on early activation of ALS for just about any patient presentation, and is presented in such a way that it produces EMT robots....see this, do that. It's very difficult to teach the course and still ingrain the theory of taking in the big picture. I usually go many hours above and beyond the 110 hour core course to share some pathophysiology of things like left vs right sided CHF, hypo vs hyperglycemia, the carboxyhemoglobin dissociation curve and the like, which I feel results in a much better prepared basic, but there are still many instructors out there churning out cookie cutter courses, which will frustrate advanced providers for a long time to come.



Just a certification point, I'm an EMT-B, and have completed the didactic potion of my medic course with the clinical to follow, but I've been including these things in my courses since long before I started my advanced training, so it goes to show that even basics can be trained to do the right thing.

I'm a Medic, but one of my biggest pet peeves is when one of my EMT's says "I'm JUST an EMT." I've had my rear-end saved more than once by AWESOME EMT partners that know their stuff. I've always said--The questions that Medics ask are a BLS skill. It's what they do with the answers that can kill, LOL!

To be honest, I really don't know. He looks better now than he did at Operation Poseidon, so I guess he's doing OK. Being on nights in A14 puts us at the end of the grapevine.

I am not sure how to classify this, but this Freightliner rig carrying the Boston EMS logo was in use during the First Night festivities where Boston EMS set up shop for the day. I assume it is a command post but if I am wrong I appologize.

That is Tango-10, I guess it can be used as a command post......it's usually being used by the Public Health Commission as a mobile mammography unit.

In the case of First Night, and on the 4th of July events, it is used as a first aid station, staffed with a doctor and EMT's. Inside is a much smaller version of FDNY's MERV's.

Decided to play with long exposures tonight, and since I've neglected to get a shot of her, here is the new A14, a 2006 Chevy/Braun. The ONLY Chevy in the fleet! Forgive the dirt, she's filthy from the road tretments following Boston's first real snowfall of the season.

Ed why is it a Chevy? The GMC chassis is the same as this Chevy one correct?

Is BEMS going to stay with GMC? Also what ever happed to the Freightliner/ALF that BEMS was testing?

They are the same chassis. The way I understand it, Braun couldn't get a GMC chassis in time to avoid a contract performance penalty, and asked the department for a variance for that one completed body. Since they are the same, the department allowed it.



The Freightliner went back after underperforming in almost every area it was tessted in.
