That is not for ladders it is a tie down and rollers on the roof more then likely for the boats that all the rescue co have. They do have smaller ladders in the back under the bench seat I think a 14 foot roof and an attic ladder.
I think it states this in the info section on the page with the photos of the new rigs.

I wonder if the ladders on the roof are unique to Rescue 5, maybe for their first due boxes where they would function more like a ladder company? Maybe R5 spec'd extra ground ladders? Just guessing...
Over the years, even with similar vehicle styles, each rescue company seems to have had subtle differences...R1 seems to be only one that routinely carries an inflatable on the roof, probably less important for R5 since they are quartered (I think...) with TSU2 with a boat. R1 has the PTO 200 CFM compressor so they have big air tools like a 90 lb street hammer and a hammer drill, but I dont think the others carry pneumatic hammers - only electric...The vast majority of stuff is standardized I imagine, with differences decided on a company level? It will be interesting to see the differences in these new rigs as they are built.

OK, from brand new and not yet delivered, how about a trip to the past? My friend Chuck Buscahrdt, now retired from the Houston Fire department made several visits to New York. I think he took these shots in the 1980's. I have no further info on the rigs, maybe others can fill in. I've posted these before and I think that someone commented then that this set was taken at the Academy. If that's not the case someone can correct me.

One of our guys sold them for a little while, until Ferrara pulled the plug on him. They always looked like good rigs when he would bring them by before delivery, but it will be interesting to see how they hold up in NY. That will tell the tale.

My understanding is ALL will get this. It is possible that they will be left on or changed after companies have them for a while. In the past Rescue 5 had wood for collapse work up there. Rescue 4 had a straight ladder mounted on thier 1979 Mack. Rescue 2 has one on the E\-One. If the City spec's them - they all get them. Companies will modify the rigs as they need.
Also it depends on the Officer. Sometimes Rescue 5 will have TSU-2 added to the boxes (ALMOST ALL) so they will have an extra man.

Chuck took in a few jobs when he was in the City. In Chicago i think they would say htis company was "led out." Don't know if there is a similar expression in FDNY.
