Overland Park, Ks 1971 American LaFrance Aero Chief 1500.200 90' George C. Reichhardt photo
Unit 450 Served until 1986 was sold to a Refinery in McPherson, KS and then in 2005 was given to Hutchinson, KS Community College for the Fire Program. It has since been sold. This was the only ALF Aero Chief in the KC Metro. OPFD was a big ALF Department until 1985 when four Pierce Dash Engine's were delivered. This unit along with Olathe, KS 1971 Oshkosh-A/ Pierce 85ft Snorkel marked the first true Aerial Devices for Johnson County, KS. Until 1971 no Aerial Devices other than the two Squirt's existed. Neighbor Shawnee, KS added a 100ft ALF 1000 Ladder Chief in 1973 and Lenexa added a 100ft ALF Century Water Chief in 1978. Rick

The Squirt was remounted in 1979 on a new Chevy C-65 chassis dry with no pump and moved to Station 1 as 451. Then the Squirt was again remounted in 1995 on an E\-One Freight-Liner Engine that served at Station 5 as 425 later Engine 45. The Squirt/E-One/Freight-Liner is now owned by Riley County, KS Fire District 1. The Ford pumper sat for years off 119th Street in Olathe in side a barn. It was in good condition and was owned by a KU professor. When he sold the land in 1999 it disappeared. Rick

Overland park, Ks 1976 American LaFrance 1500.500 Eng-433 George C. Reichhardt photo
433 and 434 were twin 1976 Century Series with White over Red with Bi-Centennial blue stars and were the second and third OPFD units without Federal Q Sirens. This started the change to White over Red for OPFD that lasted until 2006. They served their entire ten year career at Fire House 2 together. They were sold in 1985 when the four Pierce Dashes were delivered. They had various mechanical issues over the years. OPFD deiced to keep the 1970 ALF 900 Series instead of the twin 1976 models. Both Engines were sold in 1985 to neighbor Leawood, KS and assigned to Leawood Fire House 1 as 321, 331. In 1992 they were split apart for the first time and 321 became 332 at Fire House 2. They were sold in 1997 by Leawood. One was transported over seas. Until the late 1980's OPFD Station's did not cross their district boundaries unless specifically requested for fires. The thought was if the seven firemen and two engine's could not handle the fire than there were issues. This is why the Twin's served together and one was not assigned to 1's. The only exception was if the Aero Chief was needed it would cross district boundaries with its one driver and the Mack C/ALF Wagon in tow. Rick

Elmhurst was a unincorporated area next to Overland Park. In 1967 Overland Park annexed Elmhurst and their Career Firemen and Fire House became the first OPFD Station 2. The 1963 unit 430 operated front line from Station 2 1967-1970 until Station 2 was relocated in 1970. In 1970 it became a second out unit from Station 2 and in 1976 became a reserve unit at 2's. Rick

Overland Park,Ks 1958 Mack/American laFrance The American laFrance part of this is what I'm not sure of ? 1500.0 George C. Reichhardt photo
OPFD 841 OPFD 422 Classic Rig. This was the first fully custom fire engine purchased by Overland Park Fire Department INC. Unit 841 It was one of only eight Mack's to ever serve Johnson County, KS and one of only two C Model's the other was at CFD2. American LaFrance was the primary supplier to Johnson County, KS. This unit served as a Fully Mack C Model until 1971 when it was responding and hit a tree to miss a school bus. The rig hit square center. The unit was sent to ALF for a complete refurbish and amazingly the Mack C model cab was repaired. The unit was re-powered Diesel and a new 1500 pump added and tank removed. It was painted with a white top and returned as a Mack C model/ ALF. It served the last years 1971-1985 as 422 from Station 1. It was the department Hose Wagon/Pumper for the ALF Aero Chief. When responding to fires one driver would drive the ALF Aero Chief and the second would drive the Mack/ALF. At the fire the Mack/ALF would reverse out from the ALF Aero Chief and supply the water-way of the ALF Aero Chief from the plug. Photographer Unknown Overland Park, KS Fire Department INC. 1958 Mack C model 1000/300 Wreck in 1971. Amazingly the Mack C Model cab was saved by ALF. After the wreck a Demo 1971 ALF 1000 Series was emergency purchased and assigned as 421 from Station 1. The ALF was the first unit to not have a Federal Q Siren.

Mike
Hi Mike, Actually the OPFD only had one C model the 1958. Consolidated Fire District 2 had the other a 1960 C Model that was sold to Stanley VFD in 1979. Overland Park acquired the 1960 C Model during the 1990 Annexation of Stanley. Overland Park gave it to the Explorer Post and it was scrapped in 1992 sadly.

. Can someone please help me I am looking for information on the wichita fire department squads. I am looking for the following info. What is there main purpose I mean like what do they all respond too, what equipment do they carry onboard I was looking on there fire department website most of them look like they have a 300 gal tank and booster real. And I guess the last question I can think of for now is what is staffing on them. How many firefighter or firefighter paramedic's. Any info would be appreciated.

This one I need help from our Canadian friends I think. The Pemfab chassis originally had some type of ladder on it and was manufactured by Anderson. I could not find a serial number just the Anderson nameplate in the cab. Anyone have an idea of where the chassis originally came from? The tank and body was built by a local fire equipment dealer in Eldorado, Flint Hills Fire Rescue. They are the local Sutphen dealer. Frontier Oil - Eldorado Facility 1989 Pemfab/2010 Flint Hills Fire Rescue 200/4000 Foam
With the way the back end is leaning down I would recognize the chassis anywhere, it was Ladder 3 from Elizabeth, NJ an Anderson/Bronto... I saw it many times sitting at Northeast Fire Apparatus in Lancaster, Pa and always was amazed how much the back end seemed to sag.... almost like the springs were broken... same thing here.
