F.D.N.Y.
Great additions.

Looking at Engine 7 and 33, I notice a double 6 inch suction on the right side.

Are these pumpers the 2000 gpm models??

All new pumpers from 2008 and up are 2,000gpm, the 6" suctions are for draft only operations, there are 3 carried 2 soft suctions and 1 hard which is also in picture. The lowest suction is the soft hydrant connection for normal ops. The draft hook up is on the Officers side of these rigs and marked as Draft Only due to it being a 6" hook up.

I believe the current light bars that raise are made by Whelen.

The originals were made by McDermott light bar company. I believe that McDermott may have been an NYPD Highway cop that developed the light bar to provide for better visibility for the NYPD Highway cars. NYPD, NY NJ Port Authority Police and FDNY have all used them, in addtion, you'll see them on Nassau County and Suffolk County, NY Police Highway cars.

The company is located in Ridgewood, Queens.

They are made by Whelen, known as the Hi-Way Riser bars

The McDermott "highway" lights were used on the 1994 -1999 Suburbans, as well as being retrofitted to some of the older 1991 Suburbans. I believe that the Safety Battalion was the first to have these, maybe even as far back as their 1989 Suburban (I'll check my photos). The 2001 - 2005 Excursions all had the Whelen "highway" lights. They are no longer being spec'd out by FDNY. On a side note, has anyone else noticed all the problems with the lights on the new GMC's with the Battalions and EMS Conditions vehicles...it seems like an awful lot of individual LED's are not working in the grille lights and lightbars (the entire lights are not out, just multiple LED's in the lighthead)...defective lot from Whelen, incorrect installation at Oddyssey, voltage problem???

The lights on the new Battalion rigs SUCK......There IS such a thing as TOO BRIGHT! Was on a box one night a few weeks ago and walked up to the chief's rig to say hello. The side lights are SOO blinding that I really couldn't see who was in the car till I practically had my head in his window! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Blink' />

The worst is when your on the highway with multiple state cruisers flashing away. I know they serve a purpose but some feable folk might wind up with a full blown seizure soon enough if they stare at em long enough.

I've been looking at these updates on Ferrara's site from time to time - I would swear that this rig has been lettered two or three different times - The first time the lettering looked really small and an odd font - now it looks more in scale to size of the rig

I think your right, the letters have been on and off quite a bit... or the photos are out of sequence.

These photos were forwarded to me via e-mail today. I do not know who the photographer is. They were taken at some type of expo or open house in the Louisiana area.

If you're referring to the pic of the Ferrara Inferno Engine that's right above the post, don't worry...........That's the only one we had, and we currently don't have it! It was donated by the people of Louisiana to the FDNY right after Sept. 11th 2001, and went into service at Engine 283 in Brooklyn. It didn't last too long in frontline service though as "Allegedly", the rig couldn't handle the workload and the rough Brooklyn streets. I used to work with guy who transferred into my old engine company from 283. He worked on this rig and said that the space inside the cab was nice, but the rig itself was already starting to fall apart.

I believe the rig was only in service at 283 for about 2 years when they took delivery of a brand new 2003 Seagrave engine. The Ferrara Inferno rig then went out to The Rock (FDNY's Training Academy) for the next two years where they used it for chauffer training and probie school. It sat out there till September 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. The FDNY sent down a large contingent of firemen to help out with the disaster, and we also sent down the Ferrara Inferno rig to help out. Kind of a bittersweet return to it's roots in Louisiana. I had heard that it never made the trip back to NY, and these pics above confirm that!

Is it just me or does the new Ferrara rig look bigger than R5's current rig?
Reply
Yes, The new Ferrara's have the same length box as R1's Pierce. There about 2 foot longer due to the added cabinet in front of the 2 forward cabinets, right behind the cab. Plus the cab is a little shorter than the salsbury's. It's almost the same exact spec as R1's Pierce. Just a different builder...
