Looking at some of the posts on the last two pages here, namely 3983-85, 3987, 3989-94 and 4001 and 4002, I've noticed a tiny little bracket either in the center or just to the right(as you face the rig)that would appear to be for an Opticom sensor. Am I right?
I think I read somewhere that it is a bracket for GPS.

Wow, they certainly treat the rigs like shit, 10 year old rigs ready for the scrap yard, I know they get a lot of runs etc, but those rigs are some of the worst looked after rigs I have seen in my life! No wonder they turn them over every 10 years, only so much that gaffa tape and bailing wire can do !
I guess its a cheap engine for some department down the line at auction.

[/quote] It's not that they don't take care of them. The real reason is they are simply wore out in 10 years. There are more hours on the engine, pumps, and ladders in 10 years than most other departments see in 20+ years.

[/quote] Guess you should have your facts straight.Let me fill you in on a few. 1) Rigs are sent to PMP (preventive maintenance) at least 2x a year. I worked in the Washington, DC FD where PMP was thrown aside, and the worst F.D.N.Y. rig was a Bentley compared to the D.C.F.D. rigs. And a few members here CAN verify this. 2) The first 5 years all work except PMP is covered by the manufacturer. 3) As seen by individual company rigs, pride is VERY abundant. I personally wax my rig 2x a year. However, small dents and dings that do not affect the operation of the drive train, pumps and compartments, etc. are usually not repaired, unlike in other smaller Depts. With over 350 front line rigs going out the door a few million times a year, you do the math on dent repair. Not a high priority considering they are looking to close 20 companies. And looking at the date of the pic of TL-120, I think it rained around that time, IIRC. Now take into effect the atrocious streets of the 5 boroughs, narrow streets, double parked cars, cars illegally parked too close to an intersection, and driver error, along with lowest bidder on contracts, and you see what you get. If you think you can get a 75.000 lb 40+ foot long 95' tower ladder into Chinatown during the Chinese New Year, maybe you can get hired as a driving consultant and teach us all. Call Ladder Co. 9 and let them know.

I wasn't saying the individual stations don't care, but man they don't get their moneys worth, and I have always thought the rigs were far to big for where they work, hence the obvious damage to a lot of rigs, and like you say probably doens't warrant taking the rig off the run, but having those little dings lets rust in, and blam 10 years later they are stuffed.
I know my department keeps the rig for 20 years but they have a mid life refurb. I was just shocked to see all those 10 year old rigs at the rock in such poor condition, even the newish training rigs, do they have a station or a building to keep them in so to speak ?
Most of the training units are kept outside 24/7/365.
