Can someone explain the pump panels on the Phoenix wagons? Is there anyone with pictures of the panels?

The E-burys and ALF's had the pump panel behind a roll up door on the driver's side behind the rear axle. Google and ye shall find....(credit to the original photograher). From PFD E61, 200? ALF

L191 is a 2003 and doesn't move much, so I guess it'll be around a while more.



Next up is a new Type 1x interface rig for Engine 199 (I'm thinking something like a 4 door Pierce Hawk or KME Timberwolf-type rig). They got 24/7 staffing this year thanks to a SAFER grant so they need a better rig. Also, they'll be putting one of the brush trucks (not sure which) on a new chassis (I'm hearing Dodge/Sterling, but the City is all Ford, so I'm not sure). They had two new brush trucks budgeted, but since E-199 needs a permanent rig, they're going this route to use the same $$.

Engine 199's rig has been ordered, and to correct what I wrote above, they're calling it a Type I-II-IIIx, since it is basically a Type IIIx with enough water, pump GPM and ladders to make it a Type Ix. So, it's sort of a hybrid.

Bumper mounted monitor, booster lines (1" x 100') recessed under the crew doors, full compliment of roof ladders (10' folding, 14' roof, 24' 2-section), (2) 1 3/4" 200' preconnects, (2) 2 1/2" x 200', 1000' of 4" supply line, hard suctions, diamond plate, hosebed covers i.e. CDF style, 28 degree front and 22 degree rear approach and departure angles.

Sort of - It'll have more compartment space and a larger tank (I would guess that the Surprise rig is no more than 500 gallons). The closest comparison I can think of right now are the two IHC/Pierce rigs at [url="http://5280fire.com/?page_id=8131"]West Metro Engines 9 and 15[/url].



I have seen the builders drawings of it and am working on a line art drawing of it. I'll probably have that done later this week.

I've asked this question on other forums with no response, being vaguely familiar with past apparatus from Phoenix I assume they are in a compartment or in the rear/front, but it seems odd to me the engineer wouldn't have it with the rest of the panel where the operator would be. Any input? I'm just curious, Seems odd, but Phoenix has always been a little different.

Mayer22: Phoenix (AZ) FD, like the Fairfax County (VA) Fire and Rescue Department; has ordered Pierce pumpers with the intakes and discharges remote from the pump panel to make a safer work space for the operator. Fairfax County has been doing this since the first Dash's were delivered in 2005. And yes, it works fine.



JFong: PFD Ladder 9, their first Bronto was totaled after a rollover motor vehicle accident in the 1990's and a replacement was purchased.

In terms of your first question, I really don't know, other than Phoenix does have downtown and Central Ave corridor high rises, in which that sort of rig might be helpful. Several Departments in metro Phoenix (Phoenix, Tempe, Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, just for starters) have Bronto's. E\-One must have been having a big sale back in the mid-late 2000's.



Phoenix ordered the first (and replacement second) E\-One/Bronto to assign to Ladder 9, which is just a little north of downtown. The first one, a 2001 model 118' was rolled over September 29th, 2003 when the Engineer went around a corner too fast, non-emergent, if I recall. The replacement unit, a 114' was delivered a year or two later. Both rigs are pictured on [url="http://www.angelfire.com/planet/chucksfirepics4/PhoenixFire1.html"]Chuck Grow's site.[/url]



One interesting side note is that the first rig was named "The Big Unit", which was the nickname of Randy Johnson, starting pitcher of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the World Series winning 2001 season (definitely overshadowed by 9/11). Ladder 9 carried the World Series trophy through the streets of Phoenix during the celebration parade.

There was money budgeted for two new brush trucks to replace the 2003 Ford F-550/E-Ones, but Engine 199 needs a rig of it's own, suitable for that area. So, they're going to buy a new Type 1x Interface Engine for Engine 199, then take the pump module off of one of the 2003 Ford/E-Ones and put it on a new chassis (Dodge, I'm hearing rumors of). That way they can get a new rig for E-199 and a rebuilt brush truck. I'll keep up on this and see if I can get a timeline.

Just for continuity sake, I have two corrections to this posting - Peoria's 1999 IHC/E-One is gone: Blown engine. So, there is no wildland-dedicated pumper any more. If Peoria gets deployed, I guess it will be with one of the E-Bury's and the Tanker. Second, the engine at the Lake (E-199) was only fulltime during the Summer. They're back to daytime only with the Brush truck and Ambulance. The fulltime crew (Engine 199 + Ambulance) will go into service after the first of the year, probably with a reserve E-Bury until the Freightliner/Rosenbauer is delivered next Summer or so.
