Let me guess..."the city seal is copyrighted and can't be photographed"? I have buffed the LA area several times and have run into this resistance, but believe me it is the exception and not the rule, as most LAFD crews have been happy to position the rigs for photos.

Have run into that, and I recall reading and being told about some "skin" shots on the rigs. It seems that the FD found some shots of scantily clad ladies draped on the rigs, with the "LAFD" clearly seen on the rig. Whether the gals were photoshoped on the pics or not, I dont know.

I actually had a bay door shut literally in my face at 27's back in January, just as I was going to inquire about some shots. That left a bad taste, so I went and visited some County stations. They were very friendly.

I have gotten away from trying to take pictures of Clark County rigs on the apron outside of stations because I am tired of the attitude from the firefighters. It has gotten to the point that I am not really interested in taking pictures of them at all. Mainly for the same reason around here. Ever since they got nailed for overtime abuse the members here have had a attitude and everytime I stop by a station they seem not interested so I have pretty much stopped even taking pictures of Clark County. The PIO of the City of Las Vegas Fire Department did not even return my phone call about setting up some time to come and take pictures of their rigs.

So much for civil servants getting paid with our tax dollars to do a job with equipment also being paid for with our tax dollars. I have rarely run into issues but it does seem like it is starting to become more of an issue.

LAFD has always been much less interested in photogs and being friendly compared to the LA County guys. That has always been my experience as has been my father's years earlier when we still lived in the LA area.

In defense of the LA City firefighters, they have always been very professional whenever I have been there on my visits. LAFD firefighters are scheduled very heavy with morning roll calls, their physical training, fire prevention work, drills and so forth. From what I have seen they do more training than most fire departments. I had a good friend on the department that often told me that if I wanted to visit with him that I should come back after 1900 hours as they usually had duties assigned until then. I often showed up after 1900 to visit with him. On a few nights I visited, the crews were going on training exercises around 2200 hours. I've rarely run into that any other place.



I really don't believe that LAFD firefighters are lazy and they certainly seem accepting of fire buffs when I have visited. Many times on my visits, firefighters have told me of training exercises that were going on where I could get photos of multiple rigs. I've done that many times when in LA. I've also been very lucky finding LAFD rigs out on the streets or at fires. Just please remember, that LAFD firefighters have a job to do, and they're pretty busy.



I've been visiting the LAFD since 1971 and I personally think that they do a hell of a job!

Steve, with regards to your comment, I don't believe anyone is questioning the job that they do. I believe the point that is being made...regardless to reasons, that in comparison to other departments, LAFD does not have the reputation as being the friendliest to the buff/photog community. If your experience has been different, and continues to be, that is awesome, but unfortunately, they have not been to others, including myself, and my Father who said this about them 30 years ago when we lived in the metro LA area, and he had been photographing SoCal apparatus off/on since the early 70's too.



It may also presently be a generational thing that goes far beyond the LAFD because many of today's firefighters do not seem to be as interested in buffing related activities as many of the older, or now retired firefighters are. This can be seen everywhere in the buffing community as musters and similar events dwindle in size and frequency every year. The guys who own rigs know what I mean, and yes with the current economy there are some other circumstances, but, it is what it is. A fairly decent example is FIREHOUSE in Baltimore. Just 5 years ago, the parade, display, and flea market event was hugely popular. As of this year, none of these events take place any longer because nobody is interested, and it consistently deteriorated year after year. While obviously firepics.net is focused on photography, photography is just part of the bigger picture.

I will be in LA next month and will have a few hours to buff. What stations would be good to stop by? I'd like to go by #9 on Skid Row. Since being assigned to E-9 in real life I am taking pictures of Engine 9's throughout the country. May go by 15's as I have never been treated better at a fire house than when the wife and I were there in 2003. We will be staying in the 12200 block of West Sunset so any nearby station will be cool. I understand #88 has a bunch of old apparatus and would like to take a look. I have been to the meuseums (27 and old town), but did not get into the new 4's (it wasn't completed--or maybe even not started) back then.

While on the left coast we will be in San Diego. I have mapped out where 9 is and it appears to be on the way from LA to SD and if I go to Petco as planned #4 is right outside. Again I have been to the meuseum in SD.



Thanks for any info and if this has to be taken to a private conversation I will do that.

A while back a buddy and I visited the L.A. area and visited LAFD stations 33, 38 and 56 with no problems at all. In fact they took us in, shared stories and treated us great offering anything they could. And when leaving 56's they refused to let us go to 33's until they called ahead and then gave us point by point turns and phone numbers to call them in case of an issue. Additionally LACoFD, Compton and Long Beach Fire Departments where awesome as well. No issues what so ever and treated us awesome with directions, lunch, etc.



Still have a good opinion of the L.A. area fire service.
