The Sutphen Quint was bought as a quick fix during the massive cutbacks of companies in the early 1980's after the passage of Prop 2.5, which decimated fire and police depts across the state.

It was assigned to Engine 20 in Dorchester. Never really worked well for the BFD. Kind of an expirement that was doomed to fail from the first. I have more info about this some where I will try and locate it and post it.

Hope that this helps
I think it was assigned to that house, to make up for a lack of a nearby truck company in the area, espically out in Port Norfolk. Never saw it used as a ladder though...

It was bought to placate the residents of Ashmont/Port Norfolk in the wake of the Proposition 2-1/2 cuts. They made an awful lot of noise about losing their ladder truck. In essence, it was a quick fix, and it was one of three Sutphens purchased, the other two were engine companies, assigned to Engine 29 and Engine 55. It was a much larger contract, signed by the Paul administration, with a lot of engines to be delivered, but Leo Stapleton cancelled the contract as one of his first actions as the new Commissioner, and put out a new bid, which E\-One was awarded, and the rest is history.

As far as Engine 20 being used as a ladder, I heard one story of a rescue being made with the stick-I think it was on Chickatawbut St., but can't confirm it. I also saw it used as a water tower for a junkyard fire at Dorchester Av/Freeport St. in 1987.

Here's another shot of it working at a multiple alarm fire in Southie on Easter Sunday 1986.

I don't know why they're considered spares, ESPECIALLY Engine 21's old piece, they spend as much time in front-line service as some of our first line pieces! Gotta love how Ladder 3's been running a rear-mount for the past month or so because they're truck AND the spare are both nearly dead.

It could be worse, the city could have no towers running at all!

Skip maybe you can answer this- since Towers 2 and 17 went into service has response patterns for towers changed to only responding to certain districts in the city or does Tower 3 still respond to all fires in Division 1 and Tower 10 to all fires in Division 2?

Tower Ladder 3's running card took a BEATING! They no longer respond on the box to District 1, District 6 or District 4 (unless it's within their first alarm area). They respond on Working Fires in District 1, District 6 & District 4. They still respond on the box in Districts 3 & 11. TL10 still responds on the box in all of Division 2, except for Districts 10 & 12 (they respond on smoke or fire showing).

By the looks of that it doesn't look like much has changed for them from before Tower 2 and 17 went int service....I would have thought that at least Tower 17 would handle the duties in District 11 and District 5 to take some pressure off of Towers 3 and 10 and Tower 3 would not have to respond at all to District 1 unless Tower 2 was out of service for repairs...

KWDMAEMT, I don't know where you get your info about FDNY phasing out tillers. Obviously you haven't been to some of the neighborhoods where our tillers are, have you. Btw, Ladders 147 and 175 just took delivery of new tillers within the past year. The only two companies that have lost their tillers to rearmounts are Ladders 151 and 173, both in Queens.

Btw: GREAT shots of some classic BFD rigs. LOVE the old tiller pics!

Well before TL2 & TL17 went into service TL3 was dispatched on the box to every box in both District 1 & District 4. At boxes in Districts 1, 3, 4 & 6 now it's not unusual to have 2 TL's on a multiple alarm.

Whoa there cross bronx, turn your tiller around and re-read what I said. I never suggested that it was fact. In FACT, I said I heard it from a FDNY jake on another site and that I wasnt believing it until I saw it. I have indeed been to some areas, not all, but SOME, where FDNY runs tillers and your right, they do need them. Just as Boston probably needs them. And if a Boston jake came to me and said they were going back to them, Id say it in the same context I made that statement in. Thats that I heard it but wont believe it until it happens.

Im sorry for making a statement that suggested not believing what someone was saying. I wont make that mistake twice.

Guys, I'm wondering if anyone knows something about the yellow Ward LaFrance engine in the pic below:

http://www.massmetrofire.org/images/ant234.jpg

Was it a reserve engine without Co. number?

If so, what Co. was it before?

Was this the only yellow canopy-cab Ward with red wheels? I have seen pictures of only enclosed-cab Wards with yellow base and red wheels.

Thanks for any info.

Spare ladder just entering service as Ladder 4

I think this spare ladder used to be Ladder 11, that's the closest unit I can tell that has that kind of decoration around the compartments and cab...
