Here a look at it from the other side. It carries a "Skywatch" brand name on the trailer portion. That looks like a little solar array collecting panel above the loer "X".

Does anybody have pics of Engine 155 and Ladder 78 from Staten Island, as well as their firehouse? I knew a chauffuer from 155 and have never been able to find pics of these two rigs other than on fdnytrucks.com.

E-325 is running a reserve rig. Reserves are for the most part, fully stocked rigs, with all components (SCBA, nozzles, tools) locked in a box or locker in whatever firehouse it is kept in. With the GPS getting put on the rigs, the reserves are given to the respective companies to facilitate a quicker return to service, instead of giving them a spare (which has nothing) and stripping your rig for the spare. The GPS turnover is under 24 hours, so it is easier to just give that company a reserve. The magnetic numbers are used when given a spare.



Reserve engines are in the 500 numbers



Reserve ladders are in the 700 numbers



Reserve: fully stocked rig



Spare: Nothing on rig. All equipment comes off your rig and onto spare.

So can we.. While there are some awesome mechanics out of the shops, seems they let a civilian from EMS take over the overall operation of the shops. Needless to say, its a joke.



No spare tower ladders. And the 85 Mack is thrown around the city like a red headed stepchild.



Many tower ladder companies are running rearmounts. RHI a rescue was given a spare squad rig, tho this cant be verified..





Job needs to put a staff chief back in charge. And get priorities in order.

Not that I am really backing the EMS guy running the shops, I really doubt it is much his fault that there are barely enough rigs to go around. We all know how cheap the city is and the fact that many of our rigs were delivered as junk to begin with. It is possible that he may be running the shops in a cluster fu-k kinda way, but I wouldn't put all the blame on him. Just like the rest of us I'm sure he is working what little he has to the best of his abilities. I don't think one of our chiefs could run it any better with the present fleet of low bidder junk. JMHO.

Take a look at who makes the bid. WOW how know one says anything about theses people. What's the story with the new spec for pumpers. Just a thought are they going to fit in to any of the fire houses?

Hear ya, Brother. Many mechanics I talk to have said this clown killed the shops. Afraid to lose his cushy spot, so he kisses 9 MW's ***. EMS is a higher priority with him. As for junk. yes, you get what you pay for. We have an 04 rig and it sucks. Not only underpowered with the Series 50, but the suspension is the worst. Bumps we used to fly over with our 93, we now have to stop and crawl over. And that is NO exaggeration. We cant even keep up with a tower ladder down our main drags.



Yes, these are poorly designed rigs. While a Mack man {obviously! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />}, the last thing I would want to see are Mack MR's with "phone booth" crew areas. But then again, you can't beat the Mack drivetrain. You get what you pay for, and what you design, I'm sure you know. These new Seagraves are proof of that.



As for Seagrave, well they do build a good product. However, they took a good thing and ruined it (Aerialscope). RHI, they are replacing the pistons in the boom with cables. Might be an NFPA thing, or an economic thing. And their "L" cradle are also more problems than the old pistons used to level off the bucket, IMO(which was a Baker design before Seagrave bought them out). If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And I'm certain the FDNY did not wait patiently for the Seagraves delivered right after 9/11/01, and quality control was more than likely compromised.



But mismanagement at the shops is not good for morale, which in turn trickles down to maintenance. Road mechanics are great, and most houses treat them well. Seagraves crews as well. While a Staff Chief may not be the answer, a higher priority on rigs is definitely in need. Not taking anything from EMS with their buses, but what is supposed to be the greatest and best fire dept in the world can't even get tower ladder spares. Or get aerials to work (L-19).



And 100% on the no money budget. Only Houdini could make that little money work.



The Ferrara's on the street have not gotten favorable reviews from people I've talked to. With the job now going to 2,000 GPM rigs, RHI Ferrara, Seagrave, and ALF are the only bidders. Seagrave is the best of that bunch, IMO. Reserve rigs are kept in selected firehouses.



Spare rigs are kept at the shop, and if a company does go O.O.S., if the rig can be driven to the shops, it will be. With 2 members. Or towed. Rig will be stripped in quarters, and taken to shops by the ways mentioned.





As for E-325, must have ran out of spares to give them a reserve, or as I posted earlier, they are getting the GPS installed on their assigned engine. Hope this helps.
