More NC Rigs
As you'll see, the clouds were a problem the whole time I was there. Nevertheless, I thought I did pretty well with what I had to work with.

I was told this truck was purchased right around the time RHFD was going from an all-volunteer organization to to combination department, thus the reason for the pump and tank. The reasoning was if there was an extrication needed, a handline could be provided if no volunteers were available to pick up the engine.

My WLF list shows five Ambassador pumpers delivered to Winston-Salem. #80-767, 80-768, and 80-769 were 1000/500 (Model P80-1000D-5) and are shown as 1973's. The other two, #80-1202 and 80-1203, are shown as 1976 deliveries, with no Model or capacity info given.

Thanks Dave! Winston was and still is a dept that moves trucks around a lot depending on call volume so I have no idea which companies originally ran the WLF's.

Took advantage of the clear skies today & managed to get a few shots. I stopped by 10 different stations but had horrible luck finding any volunteers around their stations. At any rate, here is what I was able to get. The first place I was able to find people at was the Mount Airy FD, aka the fictional town of Mayberry in The Andy Griffith Show.

Mount Airy at one time ran a refurbed 1977 Sutphen tower that served Orlando,FL.This well-worn truck was placed out-of-service last year after the pump and ladder failed their respective tests. The town council just approved the purchase of a 2009 E\-One rear-mount tower that was a demo and should be placed into service in about a month or two.

Like many communities in NC, the FD and Rescue Squad are separate entities but both provide first responder/EMS in the communities they serve.

This was a real treat to shoot because it was my first WLF Model 82 I'd ever shot. It is still maintained as a 2nd out piece.

The last stop of the day was State Road VFD. As luck would have it, there was a volunteer there washing his car. After introducing myself, he agreed to pull out two of their rigs because he was pressed for time. State Road has a District in both Surry and Wilkes Counties.

Dave,

I found another Baker pumper today but no one around to let me look at it. Its a 1960s Ford F600/Baker at Bannertown VFD just outside Mount Airy and looks similar to Drayton's.
