I believe this is the one that was at 37 for a brief period.



After seeing this behemoth in person, I cannot fathom how they fit it into 37 to begin with.

It was, in fact, sent to 37's when it was placed into service after delivery. The folks at 37's were happy to get a new apparatus BUT this vehicle was ill-suited for their district (which is predominantly apartments with very tight turns and steep break-over angles).



After several months at 37's (and several "incidents" involving this vehicle), the folks at 37's begged and pleaded to get their former truck back (which was now a shop spare). They are, as of this writing, still on their "old" truck.



This vehicle then sat out at maintenance for an extended period of time and did nothing but occupy space. It was "field-tested" by several stations and all had the same opinion - "thumbs down". 19's (one of two USAR stations) expressed interest in it due to the extra compartment space and it eventually ended up there.



A second one was ordered and was initially slated to be sent to the other USAR station (15's) but the folks over their wanted to have a straight-stick aerial. It ended up at 36's where it is presently in service.



A bit of a silver-lining in all this is that now, when new trucks are being ordered, the officers at the receiving station have input as to what type of truck (TDA, rear-mount, or midmount platform) will work best for their district. That input, however, doesn't guarantee what will be ordered but at least they have some input.

Thanks for the info. Great concept of letting the officers of the stations getting the new rigs to have a say in type. They would have a much better idea of what is needed and what will work in the territory.

2011 Pierce Velocity (Pierce Job # 23926) Haz Mat 3 Dallas, TX



This went into service 11-2-11. It replaces a 1999 Spartan-Super Vac (seen on p.5 post #99 of this thread). This is the first Pierce in the fleet since a 1981 Pierce Tower that served at Truck 18 & Truck 20. It is also the first Dallas apparatus to have a Roto Ray installed.
