I'm a new member to the gang here, and I'm still working my way through all the wonderful photo's here. This is my first post, so excuse me for being wordy. I just want to take a minute to thank whoever posted and took the photo of this truck. This truck holds a special yet somber place in my heart. On Sept 28th 1970, my Grandfather, Walter Miller was killed in the line of duty responding to a reported structure fire in the Boro of Croydon. He accidentally slipped and fell from the apparatus as it turned off of State Rd onto Cedar St in downtown Croydon. Because of this incident, I never had the chance to meet him, and my Father who is the Ex-Chief of the Stafford Fire Co in Manahawkin NJ was unfortunate enough to bear witness to this terrible event. I'm proud to know that he died doing something he loved and that my Father and I continue to carry on his legacy. Again thanks for posting this truck. Keep up the good work. Without the hardworking individuals on these pages, telling the history of the past would be far more difficult.

What a coincidence, I just turned on my computer to look up Manahawkin NJ and I seen this post (do you run with them?). Sorry to hear about your grandfather. I witnessed an incident like this once in my fire fighting career. We stopped at the hydrant, (1st in working fire) as the FF was stepping off to catch the hydrant the driver & officer decided to drive up to the fire (less than 500 feet away) the man had an air pack on and went head first, I was next to him in the jumpseat standing up in a Ford C and watched the whole thing. He was athletic and caught him self, tumbled and ended up on his feet. This is more amazing because we were turning and he fill into the direction of the turn and there were cars parked with in 2 feet.

Boston VFD was one of 8 fire departments located in the Elizabeth Twp, PA outside of Pittsburgh. The department no longer exsits. It was one of several mergers/consolidations/closures that have taken place in the township over the past couple of years. If I'm not mistaken the truck was originally from Crafton VFD, Crafton, PA.

Frank, I started my fire service career there. I now ride with Toms River Fire Co#2 in downtown Toms River. I'm now a Lieutenant there.
