Here is my shot of the GIANT DELUGE 99 - Reo. It was still in service at the time of my photo. It was stationed at Engine 11/Medic 21 on South Street just below Center City. In teh 70's and 80's it was working alot down on Delaware Avenue at Pier and Warehouse fires.

[Image: attachment.php?thumbnail=8273] Is Deluge 99 still around or was it gotten rid of?If it was gotten rid off does that mean that Philly no longer has a Heavy Duty Deluge capabilty's or do you now have another Deluge Unit?

I'm from Chicago and here we have three Deluge Units that are on standby which are brought to the scene of extra alarms (when special called for) by the Engine company that they are quartered with. Our famous Deluge Units of the late 1960s and 1970's Big Mo and Big John used to be manned until the late 1970's and then they were gotten rid of within a year or two later.
This Reo is now part of FIREMAN'S HALL - the museum. It was removed from service in the mid 90's. One of the last major fires it worked was "THE MOVE INCIDENT" out in West Philly.

Philly did NOT replace it. Most of the "BIG JOBS" they had are over... The warehouses and pier fires are over... I am SURE if needed the truck could be pulled back in to service if needed.

Gino's is a toss up between E49 or E3.

And as for needing large amounts of water, there are two engine companies equipped with 2000GPM deck guns- I cant for the life of me remember who they are, but Engine 59 is hitting me in the back of the head for some reason.

Engine 10 and Ladder 11 would be the closest units to Gino's/Pat's.
Just a quick correction about Philly's Mack Tower Ladders. There were actually 3 of them. A 1978 Single rear axle model that originally served in TL-6, then TL-4, then junked (it currently sits in a lot with other old trucks along I-95 in Philly). TL-18 had a 1982 dual rear axle model, and a 1986 dual rear axle model was at TL-6, then TL-4, and in the past year has been junked.
Thanks for printing the information on Philly's ex Tower Ladders.I'm from Chicago (the birthplace of the Snorkel) and one of things that I had liked about the Philadelphia Fire Department is it's variety of apparatus which was applicable until several year ago when the two remaining Aerialscopes were retired and replaced with conventional Tillered Aerials.

I'm aware that an order had been placed with KME for 2 mid mount Tower Ladders in the early 2000's but after the first one was delivered and rejected the order was cancelled.I recently read that the Philadlephia Fire Department plans to finally order a new Tower Ladder for next year which seems to be long overdue.

As someone who isn't from the Philly area (but I try to keep up to date with whats happening there) it seems as if your recent Fire Department Management had been downgrading Philly's elevated stream and elevating Platform capabilty's by reducing the amount of Platforms in service and by not ordering new Platforms. When I started learniing about the Philadelphia Fire Department in the late 1980's,Philly had 6 Platforms they were Snorkels 2,5,22 and 28 plus Tower Ladders 6 and 18.In recent years the number was cut in half and just like the Tower Ladders Snorkel 22 was replaced with a Tillered Aerial Ladder instead of a Platform.

I'm very aware the Philly has been suffering from financial difficulty's for quite a while now and that is one of the reasons why the City has had to delay ordering new apparatus a number of times.Philly seems to have been ordering the ALF tillered Aerials on a pretty consistent basis however and that one of the reasons that I was surprised that the Fire Department hasn't ordered any new Aerial Platforms any sooner than this.

I have a question regarding the Fire Departments dispatch procedures when it comes to Elevating Platforms.Did Philly automatically dispatch a Platform (Tower Ladder or Snorkel) on an Extra Alarm Fire or would the Chief in charge have to request that one be dispatched on the particular fire?

In Chicago the Dispatch center will automatically dispatch a Tower Ladder on a "Still and Box Alarm" which is the equivalent to New Yorks signal 75 or to Philly's full box alarm response. If a 2-11 alarm(second alarm) is requested a second Tower Ladder is automatically dispatched as part of the 2-11 assignment. On additional alarms above the 2-11, additional Tower Ladders and Truck company's have to be specifically requested.

In Chicago we have 61 Truck Company's of which 10 of them are rear mounted Tower Ladders. We actually have put two additional Trucks in service over the last few year's however they had replaced 2 Engine company's that were taken out of service at the same time so we really didn't gain any company's.

Chicago's Tower Ladders are spread out around the city.With whats left of your Snorkels with the exception of Snorkel 28 ,your other two (2 and 5) are both Near downtown Philly so they aren't that well spread out. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/computer.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Computer' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tower.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tower' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/devil.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Devil' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/devil.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Devil' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/devil.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Devil' />

The only reason i know what i know about Philly's Mack Tower Ladders is because i grew up right outside of Philly, on the Jersey side of the Delaware River. I grew up buffing the big jobs with my father that Philly used to get in the early to mid-eighties. I remember very clearly seeing those rigs, and i also have 3 old books on Philly apparatus that were put out by (if i remember correctly) the Philly Fire Museum, around 1984. Good books if you can get your hands on them.

My two favorite Philly rigs of all time were the original TL-6, 1978 Mack TL, and Squrt 72, also a 1978 Mack.

Anyone have any pics of these two rigs in action?
In 1991 Philly re-established RESCUE 1 after 3 firefighters died in the Meridian Bank High Rise Fire. Starting the company up the City went out for donations to help fund the start of the new unit. Coca-Cola donated a delivery truck. Also to help cut the costs upfront, PFD used an old American LaFrance engine and gutted the pump and added compartments. These two rigs began RESCUE 1 and 101. It was a 2 piece Company responding to all calls with the crew divided between the two trucks.

The main Rescue was the old Soda Truck.

The Engine was a collapse truck and carried the bulky equipment.

I can't help but wonder how Philadelphia had gotten by for at least 28 years without a Heavy Rescue Company?I know that until 1961 they had 4 Heavy Rescue Company's and in 1963 the last 2 were taken out of service.Philly must have had a need for at some least some Special Operations and Associated equippment for those years after all most of the 1960's and the 1970's were called the "War Years" due to Heavy Fire Duty and in most places Heavy Rescues would assist at Fires as well as Rescues.

Chicago had phased out our (at one time 13 conventional Squad company's)by late 1968,however we had introduced our Snorkel Squad company's in the 1960's (which became our Special Operations Units) and we always had at least one of them in service throughout the late 60's and 70's despite our manpower and fire company reductions.

As a point of information our Snorkel companys were different from our Snorkel Squads. The Snorkels were used strickly for elevating streams and rescues in which the boom was used while our Snorkel Squads were two piece Fire/Heavy Rescue company's that ran with a Small Snorkel (40 to 50 feet at the time) on the first piece and a small High Pressure Fog Booster pumper as the second piece they were equipped with lot's of power tools and "Special Operations" equipment. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/drrescue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Drrescue' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/devil.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Devil' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/devil.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Devil' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/devil.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Devil' />

Lets see what I can help with.

As for the Towers, Squits and Snorkels...

The Squirts were split well between the city and ONE would get in to a box on a first or second alarm. The Chiefs could and did request them as needed on special calls. Sometimes there might be many special calls between alarms. The Towers and Snorkels were spread out also. I think that you would have one on a box assigned before the third in normal status. Again special calls could be used to get what you needed.

As for Rescue 1 in operation since 1991...

There are and were many fireman out in "THE WEST" who called it RE-CALL 1. The reason the fire would be under control BEFORE they even made it "On The Fire Ground". I remember talking to some of the Rescue members and they said that a SECOND RESCUE would be nice in West Philly... I think a few chiefs noticed this and might have been the driving force behind the formation of the current SQUADS. if you notice, Philly's Squads are remote from where Rescue is. The fact also that Engine 47 BEFORE the HAZMAT was formed was where one of the old CHEMICAL Units was Might also have to do with the location selected. As for 72's getting made a Squad, they were a busy company... They had a Seagrave Squirt (which is now Sqt 55). Also BOTH SQUADS are where the Deputy Chiefs are stationed... Weird huh?!

Quint 16 (now 69) was running a full set of Hurst Tools. I think now Engine 16 is also due to location and speed of entering the expressway. I beleive that Quint 69 is also operating this way as well. There was a time ALL BATTALION CHIEFS carried the Hurst Tools and the companies would take them out and use them... Oh that was BEFORE Rescue 1 was back in the City.

Thanks for the reply. That was quite original of them to have Hurst tools on the Battalion Chief Cars.

I'm glad that you mentioned Engine 16 because I know that they were equipped with Hydraulic rescue tools for a while now but since they put Squads 47 and 72 in service I had been wondering whether they still had the Hurst tool on board the Engine.

Thanks again. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/computer.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Computer' />

It was that way when I was last there.... in the 90's. it MIGHT be different now. I use to have the unit location chart directly from Philly Fire Radio.

If you have the time when BUFFING ANY city, to learn things the best place to visit is the Communication Center. I have to admit that security was tight and I went BEFORE 9-11. Phillys Comm Center was in Fire HQ - in the basement at 3rd and Spring Garden. I heard they were trying to move them into where the Police 9-1-1 Dispatch was.

Anyone know if this ever happened?

Are you sure you dont mean E70, located at Roosevelt Blvd. & (Langdon St? I believe?) The main reason Deputy 2 is located at E70 is for access to "The Boulevard"- which can get him to pretty much any part of the second division within minutes...........
