What exactly is this piece's function?

Grocery shopping without taking the USAR or Heavy Rescue to the store.

But seriously it carries additional equipment as well as provides a vehicle more suited for accessing terrain the USAR rig can't handle. They frequently run animal rescue calls in mountainous areas that the tractor-trailer would never be able to get to.

I stopped Monday evening to fuel up at the Pilot Travel Center in Lamar, PA. (I-80 Exit 173) and there was a Los Angeles County TDA parked nose first into one of the parking slots. It was a KME, probably just completed and enroute to the west coast. Sorry, we're not allowed to carry cameras on the trucks anymore, so no photos.

Motorcyclist over the side of the road. You can barely pick him out in the bottom right hand side of the image.

Are there any in-service older then 2008? or are they having the typical 6.4 problems?

My immediate first thought on this rig was that it looks like the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree of Fire Engines. Poor thing.

6 year old squads going to salvage.  Are they high mileage or well used.

Engine 5166 is a reserve engine that is assigned to Station 166 in El Monte. All reserve apparatus are numbered with a "5" in front of the station it is assigned to. Example: E5166 here is out of station 166, E582 would be out of station 82. When they are used by an unit that has its rig in the shops, it takes that units identity, ie: Engine 5166 being used by E48, would be identified on the radio as E48. When the need arises to man additional engines, due to major brush fires, Red Flag Weather conditions etc, off duty crews will man these rigs and then they are ID'ed by their assigned number. In this case, E5166 was part of a Strike Team of 5 Engines on a brush fire in the County. It is ID'ed as E5166 during that time. If there are more than 1 reserve piece at one station, they would be marked 5xx-A, as in E532A, E532B and so on.

There are 600 series engines, but they are mainly Training Rigs and will only be used in EXTREME cases due to their advanced age.

Hope that helps,

Units with a 200 or 300 series number are second fully manned companies at there stations IE Engine 244 is a second fully staffed Engine out of station 44
500 series - Reserve Rigs
600 - Series - Training bureau
