Austin, Tx Fire/Rescue

The Closest Rescue is assigned on Every Box Alarm, They all carry extrication tools so they can be assigned to Pin-ins, Usually if that is the case the engine will follow, if the rescue is closest the engine usually is as well and Pin ins get at a minimum 2 units with tools (ladders quints or rescues) and at least one engine. As for the size of the rescues I can't explain that, they carry the same basic complement of things like meters, cameras and what not but I know each station has some specialty equipment others don't, Rescue 14 Has the majority of the Haz-Mat, Rescue 28 Stores a majority of the Lumber for shoring and I am not sure what 20s specialty is, perhaps high angle with Station 1. Station 1, which does not have a rescue is kinda the Jack of all trades stuff, there are 2 engines and a quint assigned there and they respond on almost every specialized rescue in the City.

The Rescue companies are only housed with engines, no Ladders or Quints share quarters with them. On Fireground assignments, the rescues normally take division leads or do monitoring, they do not run in the traditional sense of a rescue or Squad company that functions like a truck on a fireground.[/quote]

How many dry Ladders are left in Austin? Are they replacing them with quints? Why being in the middle of town with two Engines is there a quint at Fire House 1. Thanks in advance, Rick

The only front line dry ladders are Ladder Co's 3, 8, 15, 31, & 36. Yes all the ladders will be replaced with quints.

Rick I think part of the reason Truck 1 became Quint 1 was call volume of the growing downtown area. If those two engines are out the quint can pump for itself. Those engines spend a lot of time chasing ambulances downtown, especially on the weekend. Also with that increasing call volume the only asset that was able to be added in an area where there has been a growth of 40,000 since the 2000 census was the relocation of Engine 35 to Station 22 as Engine 66. Granted the fire volume hasn't really changed but the engines in Quint 1s response area get beat chasing us around at EMS

This picture makes me sad. I love Sambets. Could you see how bad the damage was?

The damage wasn't to bad. From what I remember it was only smoke and water damage.

Being a fellow Texan I wanted to share what I found today in Olathe, Kansas at Conrad Fire Equipment.

This is a super sharp Tower Ladder, and love the Arrow XT. They said it had some mechanical issues on the trip south and should be back on the road early next week.
