Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous
#61
The new Crosspointe Station in Fairfax County, Virginia opened just recently. It is Station 441. Although I have not yet had the opportunity to visit the station, I did catch Truck 441 at a local dealer for some work. Truck 427 from Fairfax County (West Springfield) transferred to Station 441 when the new station opened. I was told the ladder on this truck was damaged during a house fire.

Fairfax County, Virginia Engine 429 from Tysons Corner runs this 2005 Pierce Dash. It is one of ten Dash engines that were received by the county in 2005. I don't get to this area of Fairfax County to often, and Station 429 is a busy house. It has taken a variety of station drive by's to find Engine 429 in the station.

Over on the other end of Winchester, a unique new monster medic is in service at Winchester's Friendship Fire Company.

This is a 2006 International 4300/Horton. Note the LED Roto-Ray located on the front of the box.

Friendship continues to experiment with different colors. The more recent apparatus have been orange and white, which was a change from red and white. Now, they have added the orange and black with this new ambulance. I was told that they expect future apparatus ordered to arrive in the orange and black colors but not to expect any existing apparatus to be repainted.

Stay tuned for some interesting (at least in my mind) posts of fire apparatus from the deep Southwest part of Virginia. I hope to post those shortly.

Mike, this sure explains why when I was positioning this rig for photos last Saturday, the guys told me that "some guy from the Virginia Fire News was just here a few days ago and shot some really nice photos." I was at a loss since I knew Jerry and John hadn't been out that way.

Shall I post a sunlight shot of it for you? <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/computer.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Computer' />

Just down the road from the Town of Farmville, located near the intersection of US 15 and VA 133 is the Hampden-Sydney College. H-SC is well-to-do male college, where the students enjoy going to into Farmville at night to find the females at the co-ed Longwood University. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Thumbsup' />

Located on the grounds of H-SC is the Hampden-Sydney Volunteer Fire Department, a department that is made up mostly of college kids. Over the past five years, they've made remarkable upgrades to thier fleet, including this newly delivered Smeal Sirius. It replaces a Ford C/Pierce which H-SVFD purchased from the Monelison VFD in Amherst County, VA only a few years ago.

The department also took delivery of a Smeal Sirius 75' RM aerial last year.

Everything worked great for that visit - the guys even called to have a driver come down. Unfortunately, the overcast weather. It was a fun quick visit - first time I have ever been to Farmville.

Post away!

Wrong highway. How about the Rt. 50 corridor, sell some books to the home boys and stay a littlecloser to home.

I have previously posted some of the new tankers that Loudoun County, Virginia has ordered and placed into service recently. Four 2006 International 7600/2007 4-Guys 1500/3000.

Here is Round Hill's Tanker 4 which I caught checking a local water supply. It carries serial number F2498.

Round Hill still has their older tanker on their roster, however it is now running as Reserve Tanker 4 and there is no longer any room at Station 4 for this to be kept inside. It now resides in the back lot. Not sure how much longer this will be around.

Reserve Tanker 4 is a 1996 Freightliner 70/Superior

1000/1800

As some of you know, I took on a different job with my company which requires me to travel throughout Virginia and West Virginia. It also gives me the opportunity to do some "quick" visits of fire departments that I have never visited or seen. I usually plan my visits and photographs around some decent weather. With these visits, I basically take what I can get because I am not real sure if or when I will return to the area. It has been a lot of fun.

This past week, I had a three day work visit planned in the Southwest part of Virginia (Virginia/Kentucky area). I had no real plans on specific stations to visit, just whatever was closest to the business meetings I had throughout the day. When I could stop to visit departments, they were usually quick stops. The other real challenge was just finding folks at these stations. During this week, I hit some weird weather - mainly overcast with some bursts of sun and showers. Also had some heavy fog in the mornings around the mountains. Some strong storms also. I will say this - the folks in SW Virginia were some of the most friendly people I have met. Very accomodating, especially when I had little time before I had to hit the road. I saw first hand southern hospitality. Most of the station stops occurred in the later part of the afternoon.

I will start off with a few trucks on my way down to SW Virginia.

I stopped by the Augusta County FD just off I81 between Harrisonburg and Roanoke wondering if their new American LaFrance heavy squad had arrived. It had not. Their older 1986 International/Swab is still performing squad duties.

Stayed overnight in Roanoke and found this unusual command unit that operates from Vinton, which is just outside the city of Roanoke.

It is a 1988 Transm.

I know we have another thread for junked apparatus, but I thought I would include this here since it is a Virginia truck.

Hoping some of the Richmond/Henrico guys can help me with some additional information on this International. I am curious how many of these International/Oren's Henrico County ran.

This is a 1964 International/Oren 1000/500 with serial number 1967. It is located at the A.D. Weddle Company in Roanoke.

My first stop in my SW Virginia trip was Pulaski, Virginia, where I was surprised to find a truck that is still in service.

Pulaski's apparatus have the radio ID of "Unit".

Unit 3

1970 American LaFrance 1000

80' Aero-Chief

s/n 12-1-1926

ex - North Syracuse, NY

Pulaski purchased this truck in 1986 and it replaced a 1941 American LaFrance 65' midship which is now owned by a Shriner organization and is kept at the old firehouse in downtown Roanoke.

Unit 1 at Pulaski is a 1981 Ford C800/Grumman/Oren with a 1000/800 and serial number 16351.

No problem on this truck finding which compartments hold the "Air Paks".
