DETROIT FIRE ENGINE OPERATOR (FEO) JOSEPH TORKOS WAS FATALLY INJURED AFTER AN ACCIDENT AT W GRAND BLVD & 14TH ST THIS EVENING WHILE RESPONDING TO A BOX ALARM FOR A FIRE IN A VACANT DWELLING. FEO TORKOS WAS PINNED UNDER THE RIG AFTER BEING EJECTED. LT. GRYSKO ALSO IS IN VERY SERIOUS CONDITON AT THIS TIME WHO WAS ALSO IN THE RIG AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT THE 2 DECKIES (FIREFIGHTERS) WERE ALSO TRANSPORTED AND ARE IN TEMP. SERIOUS CONDITION. FURTHER INFO AS ITS AVAILABLE.

It always saddens us to learn of the death of a brother like Joseph Torkos. I am sure FirePics is filled with people who care and who will remember him and his family in their prayers. Remember, too, the stress on the others - include them.
My thoughts and prayers are with the brother's family and the Detroit FD. Please post funeral details when they are available. I might be taking a ride to the midwest this week.
I notice more and more that people just don't pay attention to the fire trucks coming down the street. They are loud, bright, and HUGE! I have found myself getting out of my parked vehicle and yelling at motorist so they would move so an engine could get through. it rediculous! and for the people who dont watch when rolling through a green light they always need to think twice and even though your light is green you should always yeild to any emergency vehicle! R.I.P Joseph Torkos and i hope all the other guys get well very soon. Here is a link showing yet again the carelessness of people criminals or not.

I just read on firefightingews.com that there has been 19 LODD's in the US so far this year. Civilians are getting more and more careless, this is the first time that I have seen, that their have been more FF deaths then P.D.

Very sad, rest in peace. And a speedy recovery to the Lt. People do not yield to emergency vehicles, but those same people are the one's that complain and get angry when it takes fire or ems longer to get to a scene when they need assistance...when they are the very reason we have to be more cautious in responding.

Now I would like to add one more thing. I don't know the details of this accident regarding whether or not our brothers were seatbelted in the rig so I'm not passing judgement. However, I will say that there is NO EXCUSE for any firefighter not to be belted while on a moving firetruck. With cars today people don't always hear fire trucks until the rig's on top of them at which point they may zig instead of zagging. It only takes 2 seconds to belt up so DO IT.

Keep in mind people, when your driving keep the music down, YOU MAY HEAR A SIREN. Do the speed limit, and check your mirrors, if you see lights flashing whether they be Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Etc. USE CAUTION AND PULL OVER. It may save your life, their lives, and the ones they are going to save. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION WHEN DRIVING....

I wasn't going to chime in here, but I'll back you up. No seatbelt = ejection = BAD. I know that the guy driving the SUV didn't have a license, etc. but I suspect the two most severe injuries would have been damn near nothing had they been wearing their belts. It doesn't lessen the sadness of the death, but should be a lesson to all of us that may not belt up. If the members in question were belted, then I stand corrected.
