Not to be a smarta**, but does the cook just cook or are they an actual Firefighter?  I ask because I have heard the term before while at some Chicago stations, but never thought to ask when I had the chance.

The Cook.. is usually the 5th guy on the company. CFD runs 5  on engines and trucks. The 5th guy usually stays back unless its a working fire.
