Note: Never opened as a Fire House only housed a reserve Engine. The building was given to Edwardsville Public Works and the fire department sign removed.

Fire House 1 and the twin 1989 Pierce Lance Pumpers were part of a 1989 Bond Issue. Fire House 2 was constructed with the remaining money.

Osawatomie State Hospital is one of the last two State Hospitals in Kansas and is located outside the City of Osawatomie, Kansas. They are a State operated Security Safety Department that provides security and fire protection for the Hospital grounds. The grounds are comprised of single family private residence and commercial buildings. They have an automatic aid agreement with Osawatomie Fire Department and Miami County EMS provides EMS services. Hospital fire apparatus prior to 1980 were solid RED.



Prior to becoming a safety security department the fire chief lived on the second floor with his family. Sadly the fire house was built without a fire pole although it has a spiral stair case. The first bay was enclosed within the last ten years.

Note: This is the first single story KCFD fire house built in thirty one years. The last seven built have been two story with brass poles. The new Fire house 39 originally designed as a two story fire house with poles. Due to the current economic state of the country this fire house was delayed six years. It was decided once Mast Ambulance was absorbed into the fire department the fire house could no longer wait. Old Fire House 39 was housed in a two bay temporary metal building that lasted forty-four years. The fire department decided to go forward with a single story design to accommodate the ambulance and crew at a reduced cost. On a side note this is the most traditional looking fire house in the city. With the exception of Fire House 41 the other six two story fire houses have a very business like appearance.

It is actually kind of odd, part of the area, It is walled off as the tool room and some storage. There is an open air mezinee directly above that shares the same vaulted celling as the bay. It appears eventually it could be opened up as a bay if needed. Currently 5 is the HazMat station and houses the HazMat and Trailer with Engine 5. It is a neat fire house and was designed to fit in with PGA golfer Jim Colbert's Colbert Hills golf course and the Grand Mere mixed use development.

Fire House one and two where both relocated during 1972 into modern facility's. Fire House Two moved to the south side of the city and retained its two story design with fire poles. Fire House One became a single story design. These new fire houses where required for the cities growth and newly acquired twin Oshkosh/Pierce/ 85ft Snorkel's for Truck 1 and Truck 2. The Independence 76er's Fire Historical Society has the fully restored 1928 ALF pumper that opened this fire house.

Forgot to mention. In the photo it appears there is a side bay. This is actually the main entrance with glass doors.

Paola, Kansas Volunteer Fire Department

 

For many years the Paola fire department operated out of the turn of the century city hall complex. Engine 1, Engine 2, and Engine 5 were stored at City Hall with all other units stored across the street in a metal building. During 2009 a sales tax was passed for the construction of a new two story fire house. During this time the Paola USD School District was constructing a new high school. With multiple delays in land purchase process. The Fire Department decided to purchase and renovate the old Paola High School. In the photo below the original building was torn down leaving the 1950 addition and gym. The fire department had one new bay constructed for a future tower ladder. In January of 2010 the Paola Fire Department moved into their new two story fire house. This renovation won the Fire Chief Fire House design award.

 



 

New Drill Tower added to front of the building with future tower ladder bay. All new doors were cut into the building to create the apparatus room. The second floor above the bays were converted to living quarters. Note the stucco finish were the original build connected.

Second floor hallway. The building is often used for meetings and the gym is still used for actives. The second floor hallway keeps traffic out of the living quarters. All doors to the living quarters are pass carded.

Holy cow that is awesome. Great outside the box thinking that probably saved them a bunch of $ while still giving them a really functional facility with room to grow.
