On Wednesday, I went to visit the first fire department I ever photographed apparatus at, about 32 years ago.  On the way, I stopped at Brenham.

When I moved away from Killeen in 1981, the KFD was a mostly volunteer, combination department running from five stations, protecting about 50,000 people.  Much has changed.  Today, Killeen is home to over 130,000.  The City has spread out from about 35 square miles to over 105 square miles.  Stations 1 and 3 have been relocated to newer sections of town, joined by Stations 6, 7, and 8.  Stations 9 and 10 are already in the works.  All stations are career staffed, with a small force of Volunteers that respond when needed.

When I arrived in Killeen, I went to "Central" Station (there is no Station 2), but everyone was at lunch, so I hit Stations 4, 3 and 1, then returned to Central.  The first two apparatus photos I ever took were on the ramp at Central.

Killeen has three of these brush rigs.  A unique feature is breathing air is piped to the driver, officer and both exterior riding positions.

Killeen operated seven of these Freightliner/E-One pumpers, all purchased between 1996 and 2001.  Engine 1 is the only one still assigned front line, but was sitting dead behind Station 1 with a blown transmission.  The rest are in reserve.

I returned to Central to shoot the in-service rigs and a couple reserves parked out back.

There are no engines at Central and Station 6.  The aerials are both quints and function as such.

As you may have noticed, I included an additional number for each Killeen apparatus.  Back in 1981, they only had these numbers and nothing on the rig reflected where it was assigned.  The first rig I ever shot was 208 and I finished this visit to Killeen with today's 208.
