I am interested to read that the former Old Forge ladder only has a tip load of 250 pounds, that would, in my head, really limit the staffing who could operate from the tip of this unit or use it safely for fire fighting.  Is this common of ladder trucks now a days or is this unit specific?  Seagrave specific??

The 250 pound tip load is typical when you only have two outriggers. That way, you can nose into a building (even driving up on the sidewalk etc), set your jacks on the street, and raise your stick. No wires to worry about. When you have 4 outriggers, typically they are all placed on solid ground, which often limits you to the street. Also, the 250 pound tip load is at low elevations...it goes up as the ladder is raised. Not often you are doing a rescue at horizontal. As well, there is a safety factor built in-depends on flowing water, etc but its typically designed for a 2 to 1 or 2.5 to 1 load.(meaning its designed for 500 pounds but rated for 250. One of four similar apparatus delivered to Sandy Springs, along with two Enforcer pumpers, during 2006.  When delivered, all four quints had 2000 GPM pumps.  One pair had Detroit Diesels and the other pair had Cummins.  All six rigs were replaced with new Pierce Quantum apparatus within the past year.  Quint 1 is now a platform instead of a stick. 

 

Sandy Springs is one of the newer cities in Georgia, incorporating in 2005.  Their Fire Department began operation in 2006, responding from three former Fulton County stations (2, 6, & 18) and Atlanta Station 39.  Atlanta closed 39's many years ago.  An agreement was reached between Atlanta and Fulton County where Fulton Engine 4 occupied that station and responded first due to Engine 39 and Engine 4's territories.  That arrangement continues today, courtesy of Sandy Springs Quint 4.

The x-Monroeville ALF Century is historically significant as it is: 1.The last open cab Century rig built by ALF. 2. Likely the last open-cab rig delivered in the USA.3. One of the very few Century rigs with an open cab.

Additionally, once its service in Monroeville was completed, it operated for several years as Engine 287 for United Volunteer Fire Rescue in Wall, PA (just outside Monroeville).


Wall VFD merged with East McKeesport #2 VFD around the time this unit was acquired and I can't recall if the purchase was made pre-merger by Wall VFD.

It is a 1982.  The last Mack open cab was built in 1974.  I believe it was the very last open cab apparatus built, unless Crown built one.  It is now owned by Mike Lieb of Ebensburg, PA.  I saw it 3 weeks ago.  It can go right back into service.  The other open cab Century built that I am aware of was a 1979 100' midmount ladder for Latrobe, PA.  It was scrapped though.

There's no front suction in the 1986 slide for Monroeville E-52. Wonder when it was added.

Ed, don't forget Donora's open cab, I believe it is a 1979?  I'm sure Pat or Doc S can confirm that.

 

As far as when it left #5, I know Wall ran a Pirsch custom cab engine and the xFDNY Mack Telesqurt, and I don't think the station was large enough to fit three pieces, but maybe all three were in there at one time.  Wall always  had something smaller sitting outside too.  As far as I know, I started following everything in 1998 and the open cab was always at Wall.

 

EngineMan, your attention to detail is astounding.  I think it may have been slightly refurbished when it was repainted to the Monroeville colors.

The ALF replaced the former Oxon Hill Pirsch engine at Wall. The Mack Squrt was replaced by a Duplex KME Squrt from VA Beach. They also had a Chevy Mini Rescue. All pieces remained after the merger with East McKeesport, but I think only the Duplex/KME is left now. The Mack went to Texas and last I heard was scrapped.
