Sterling, Virginia is in Loudoun County. The Sterling Volunteer Fire Department runs from Station's 11 (Sterling) and 18 (Cascades). The Sterling Rescue Squad also has two stations - 15 and 25. Station 15 shares quarters with Fire Station 11 in Sterling and Rescue Station 25 shares quarters with Fire Station 18. The fire department and rescue squad are seperate organizations.
Both departments have recently received new apparatus.
Let's start on the fire department side.
Tower 11 is currently being prepared for service and will run with this 2006 Seagrave TPOAKK. It has a 104' bucket and carries serial number 87R01.
It has a four section steel ladder and carries quite a number of ladders - 40', 35', two 28', two 20', 14', and a Little Giant. A new color difference with Tower 11 compared to other Sterling fire units is that the roof is painted red.
The new Tower 11 replaces a 1991 Simon-Duplex/LTI 100' tower that was sold last year to the Harrisonburg, Virginia FD where I am told it has received a new paint job and is looking good.
With the arrival of the new Seagrave, I have received a variety of questions on whether or not Sterling Fire will continue to run their two Quints. Quints 11 and 18 are identical 2000 Spartan Gladiator/Smeal's 1500/500 with 75' ladders
When Sterling Fire sold their old Tower (1991 Simon-Duplex/LTI), they used Quint 11 as "Truck 11". When the new Seagrave tower goes in service, "Truck 11" will go back to Quint 11. The department will keep both Quints.

Last one, and one I really like. Although the majority of the ambulance fleet at Sterling Rescue are monster medics, they do have a policy of keeping at least one four wheel drive unit on the roster.
25-3 was just recently delivered and is being prepared for service.

Several accident situations where Sterling Rescue units have been hit while on calls have prompted a new reflective striping on the rear of the new M2's and the brand new Ford.
I like the chevrons on the rear of the ambo's. If I may add - One thing I find interesting on the ambo's is the fact the rear interior they still use the wood grain look. Real old school. Thanks, Neal Craig

It was not sold. Sterling VFD considered selling Quint 18 and purchasing a reserve ladder truck with a longer stick and additional compartments. The department did contact a dealer, and a offer was made, however it was not approved by the membership.
Stations throughout Loudoun County, Virginia are in the process of receiving new apparatus. I posted Sterling's new Seagrave tower and new ambulance in a previous thread.
Additional apparatus continues to arrive.
Several years ago, the county began an agressive plan of replacing the tankers in the western end of the county. Loudoun County is very much like two seperate areas - the eastern end of the county has many newer homes and has a suburban feel to it. The western end, although new home developments are being built, has a more "rural" feel. This area runs the majority of the tankers in the county. A plan was developed to upgrade the tankers to a minimum of 3,000 gallons.
The first taker bid put out by the county back in 2004 had Pierce winning the bid and the new arrival went to Hamilton.

Although the county purchased these tankers, they were painted in the volunteer departments colors. During the time that Hamilton received their tanker, they changed their color to red and black. I have heard rumors that Tanker 5 may get a black roof.
Last year, Loudoun County placed an order for four additional tankers. Although Hamilton's was built by Pierce, the new contract of 4 went to 4-Guys.
During the last few months, the four new tankers have been arriving.
The first tanker in service was Tanker 610 in Lucketts. Loudoun County is part of the Metropolitan Washington D.C. Council of Governments (COG) system, and the county has received the number "6". Thus, each Loudoun unit starts with the number 6 followed by the station number. In this case Tanker 610 runs from Lucketts Station 10.

THe new tankers are equipped with two 2,100 gallon folding tanks, three 10 inch square electric dumps with extension chutes (both sides and rear), On Spot automatic snow chains, and rear vision cameras.
Again, the tankers are owned by the county but painted in the volunteer fire department colors.
Round Hill Tanker 604 received the next tanker. I have not yet had the opportunity to photograph Tanker 604. The only difference between Tanker 604 and the others is that the red color is not as dark as Tanker 610 and Tanker 608 (Philomont). Tanker 604 was just recently placed into service.
The two remaining tankers (Purcellville Tanker 602 and Philomont Tanker 608) are still being readied for service and station training will begin within the next several weeks.
Purcellville's apparatus is lime green in color. The new Tanker 602 was painted this color. This is Purcellville's first tanker.

The final tanker in this order is for Philomont Tanker 608.

Tanker 608 is the only Tanker of the group certified as a BLS non transport unit. All of Philomont's apparatus have this designation, so the Tanker will carry some BLS equipment.
Loudoun County has had explosive growth over the last 10 years or so and the fire department has been challenged to keep pace with this growth. The county had several "temporary" stations built, with the expectation that new stations would be built.
In 2001, the Arcola Pleasant Valley VFD and Loudoun County began a joint adventure to build and staff the South Riding Fire station. Arcola provided much of the apparatus, and Loudoun County provided paid staff.
Here is the first Station 19 in South Riding. Housed at Station 19 is Engine 619, Ambulance 619, HAZMAT 619, and the HAZMAT Support 619.
Ashburn's Moorefield Station (Station 23) is also in temporay quarters.
