Quote: With this being said and its considered a Smeal chassis can they even get a Spartan chassis any more. I thought that Spartan would not sell to any MFG that has their own Chassis.I think since Smeal sells a "badge engineered" Spartan chassis, Spartan still supplies them. I also think Spartan took a substantial hit to their production when they cut off Rosenbauer, and learned a lesson in the process.

I wonder how serious Spartan is about not selling to Rosenbauer considering Ft. Worth got 3 or 4 this year.
Quote:I wonder how serious Spartan is about not selling to Rosenbauer considering Ft. Worth got 3 or 4 this year. Very serious. Last year, Rosenbauer lost what was going to be a very lucrative deal because the customer insisted that it must be a Spartan chassis, and in the 11th hour, Spartan declined to sell to Rosenbauer (again). In the end, both parties lost out on the deal...

Ft. Worth received 3 Spartan/Rosenbauers in September with 4 more supposed to be here any day now.
Any idea how? Quote:Ft. Worth received 3 Spartan/Rosenbauers in September with 4 more supposed to be here any day now.Existing long term contracts I believe were honored by Spartan, i.e. multi year, multi rig orders.
Anything ordered before X date (February 28th comes to mind) would still be delivered.

My immediate first thought on this rig was that it looks like the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree of Fire Engines. Poor thing. [/quote]
Some recent Pittsburgh Photos. The City now has 13 of these Spartan/Spencer pumpers in service, with the most recent (2) 2015 Models being assigned to Engines 3, and 19. Engine 3's KME was reassigned to Engine 24 after theirs was in an accident, and most likely totaled.
The City purchased in 2005 (4) HME Toyne pumpers. (2) are currently still at their original assignments at Engine 6, and 26, while the other two were reassigned to Engines 31, and 34. The City recently purchased (5) 2008 KME engines which previously served San Diego, CA. Rumor has it that they will replace all of the HME/Toyne engines. I was able to get a couple grab shots down at the City shops.
The City had been deadlining a good deal of apparatus also with replacements arriving. The (2) E\-One 110' RM's that served Fairfax County, VA. previously are either gone or currently being auctioned. A 1990 Pierce that formerly served Engine 31, and a 1986 Pierce that formerly served Engine 13 were awaiting disposal also. The City recently purchased a 1994 Spartan/Marion from Spring Twp. in Berks County to run as Rescue 3, which is a reserve. With that purchase both of the 2000 FL/ALF rescues that were assigned to Rescue 1 and Rescue 2 are being disposed of.
Nice, thanks for the updates!
Yes, thanks for those comprehensive updates. That's good information.
Will they replace the officer seat with an SCBA seat, as those rigs stand the officers SCBA is in then officers number 2 compartment.

I was told there were a lot of changes that needed made before the San Diego rigs could enter service, but they didn't go into detail.
OK, so it looks like someone is trying to do their best to upgrade the fleet here but why?
In that I mean did some rigs just deteriorate prematurely, or is this a case of purchases being needed but not fulfilled in the past? I mean 10 year old rigs going the way of the Dodo, and being replaced by 7 year old units that I'm sure have just as many miles/ hours on them is telling I think, but don't know for sure. It seems they have taken deliver of quite a bit of apparatus in the past 4-5 years so I don't think it's putting off orders, but that could an illusion as many more were needed than ordered. Seems like there could be many things at play here, and being from Detroit I've seen it all and would be curious to hear what's really happening here. Kris Quote:OK, so it looks like someone is trying to do their best to upgrade the fleet here but why?As I understand it, the San Diego rigs were purchased primarily to improve the quality of units in the reserve pool. They've done the same thing in the past purchasing 2 rearmount ladders from Fairfax County and if I'm not mistaken, a couple of local used VFD engines too. PBF has made significant strides in updating their frontline fleet over the past 5-10 years. With the most recent assignments, I'm pretty sure all of the companies are now in frontline units that are 10 years old or less, many are 5 or less. The need for buying some units for the reserve pool can be traced back to inadequate replacement in the past. That was certainly the case with the aerials as many were disposed of instead of moving to reserve duty with the arrival of new aerials. The City went through some pretty rocky financial times a decade or two ago and apparatus replacement appeared to be one of the many areas that was neglected as a result. Although the age/mileage may be similar, the environments in which these units operated are very different. The winters in this area can be partiuclarly harsh on the longevity of vehicle bodies as compared to the relatively mild conditions that exist in southern California. If the Toynes didn't hold up well, it may be more cost effective to get rid of them and use the San Diego rigs instead until additional new units can be purchased.
Hey Pat,
Would you have a current apparatus roster (including spares and reserves) for Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire???
I would also love to see a current roster - if available.
This is my current roster, but is not 100% up to date, as I have not confirmed a couple things.
