Was this a cost cutting measure with the commercial pumper? I noticed alot of cities in these areas have pumpers like this.

On the commercial chassis question, St. Paul had a long history (30 +) years of mounting engines, and some aerials on Ford L and C chassis. The SPartan/Custom Squads delivered in 2002, and the SPartan/Custom engines delivered in 2006 reversed that trend. To answer the question, Yes it was probably a cost cutting move.



Larry: The 2 most recent company closures were E-20, which was closed completely, and E-1, which became Squad 3 in 2006. All the Squads have pumps and tanks, and Squad 3 was supposed to keep their "First in district" for fires, but I do not know if that is still the case. My photo partner (SPFDE8) says that all that means is more work for him. The department is currently building a combined house that will include Stations 1 and 10. Station 1's property is coveted by developers and Station 10 is over 100 years old. No one knows for sure what the future holds, but the current plan is to put Sq-3, E-10, L-10, M-10 as well as the Deputy Chief (24hr), and Headquarters staff.



There have been other company closures, but quite some time ago and would take some research on my part. It has been so long ago that the apparatus is long gone.

I had some time this afternoon and was able to scan some current and retired St. Paul rigs. While by no means complete, and in any order they are a representative sample from the past 40+ years. Some of the pictures are mine, but most are from Red Novecki and Paul Barrett.

This picture is one of three identical engines that were assigned to Engines 4,9, and 19. Engine 4 and 9 just received new engines, that were delivered 2008. The former E-4 and E-9 will head to the spare fleet.

This 1977 Ford L/General Safety was one of three delivered. This one saw duty at Engines 8,22, and 9

This 1968 Ford C/General Safety is one of two. This one served at E-14,E-19, and E-23

Three 1988 Ford/Custom Fire 1000/500, were delivered to Engine's 5, 8 and 13. Engine 13's also served a brief time at Station 22.

Two 1985 Ford L/General Safety engines were delivered to E-17 and E-18. Engine 17 kept their unit until assigned a new unit in 2000. Engine 18's was also assigned to Engine 8, before being assigned to Engine 6.

There were 2 Mack C95 engine delivered in 1962. One was assigned to E-18 and E10 throughout it's career. The other was assigned to Engines 1,4,17 and 11 during it's stint in the department. Unfortunately, I am unable to read the shop number to verify which one this is. E-28 denotes a spare engine.

This was assigned to E-9, E-11, L-4 and L-24

It is not in the spare fleet. Old L-22 and Old L-10 are the two spares in the fleet. I do not know where the Snorkel ended up.
