Thanks Jim I had heard Reading was getting a Seagrave. I also heard two other Seagrave Tid Bits from north of Boston. 1 is Revere might order a Seagrave Pump. 2 Reading and Wakefield might buy identical Ladder trucks from Seagrave next year.
At this point in time, Reading is not getting a new ladder until 2009 at the earliest, with a chance of it being next year. And lets put it this way, its hard enough for 1 department to come up with specs let alone 2 agreeing on the same spec, so I wouldnt put much into that happening.....but who knows. A LOT of things would have to come together for that rumor to come true.
But one hard core fact is the new sales/service facility in Wakefield. Its a second facility to be run by Fleetmasters, the current Mass area Seagrave dealer. According to their website, it will open in the fall of this year. It would be open already, but the word I got is that the current occupier of the building, Crystal Trucking, hasnt had work completed on their new building...wherever that is.
I also heard about Revere, but I heard its going to be another 2 engines and 1 tiller. But they are only looking at thier possibilites right now. Seagrave has REALLY come on strong in this area. Worchester is about to take delivery of at least 1 if not both their new Seagrave engines. Both the Melrose and Somerville tillers are at the dealer if not already in their respective cities (will be within a week if not), Wakefield and Hadley with new pumps, Reading with a pump on order now and Boston possibly getting 2 tillers if the proper chips fall the right way. Thats a decent size dent in a predominantly E\-One and Pierce region.

Ok here is what is happening in Reading. We just placed an order for a 2007 Seagrave with the new Matrix Body. The pump has a 1250 waterous with 2 line foam eductors. It has a CAT C-13, 750 water and 30 foam. Also, a 3 point winch, chevron striping in the rear, and other little things.
The ladder situation is this, Reading and Wakefield are exploring the possibilty of a dual purchase of a Ladder. The trucks would be the same except for the color, on ivory the other ebony, (it is all about the roof color). The ladder specs are being worked on as we write this now. There is very little differences in what we both want.

The ladders are being researched right now. The information is coming in from all over and the spec will begin to be worked on in the fall. The ladders will be the same except for the roof color and some minor changes. If it doesn't work out, Reading is probably going to be getting a ladder in fiscal yr 2009 which is next year as we are in fiscal yr 2008 in july. There is the outside chance it will be a pump and a ladder together. The pump will be a double to what is on order now.

I know that Seagrave is trying to get in up here too. Did I miss something? The grant that I heard Boston was going after had a caveat that if a manufacturer was under any type of government assistance, they got preference on the contract. Last check showed some new company out of PA with a HUGE SBA loan to be the preferred builder. Kinda the same thing as NYC being forced to buy all those Gran Furys in the late 70's and 80's. FAST or FIRES, or something like that was the name. I also heard Boston might back off trying to get the grant because of this.

OK, OK, here they are. I have only two factory photos of Melroses five Maxims. They had a 1929 pumper, two 1946 pumpers, a 1953 quad, a 1958 pumper (and if you want to count the Wakefield ladder Melrose and Chelsea borrowed, six).
First up is a shot of the 1953 quad. No fancy markings on it though.
Lastly, just for giggles is the ONLY Maxim I could find with a similar door logo. This was a 1940's Ford from Bar Harbor, Maine. I'd have to agree with Doug - this was more a Seagrave thing. The only similarities I can find with Maxim might be the double shadowing on the lettering (the light blue and dark blue).

FYI - Waltham is also ordering a Seagrave Tiller for their Ladder 2 on Moody St. I'm told it will be identical to the Baltimore City truck that was in the area earlier this year...they are also ordering a pump for E-4 on Prospect St. however that will be an E\-One
