Steve,
Excellent history of St. Louis! I am waiting to see if anyone has the mid 70's to the change to quints to post here as I have the department shot after the changeover in 1988 or 89. I am also going to do some shooting this weekend here in STL to update my roster of rigs and get a sample of the current fleet.

Thank you Dennis. I'm aware of another St. Louis thread that has some photos of the 21 Howe engines purchased in 1977 in it. I am also really curious to see if there what other apparatus purchases were made by the St. Louis FD before they went to the "Quint" concept in 1988-1989.
StL334- Firepixer Ben has a number of pictures of St. Louis Fire Stations posted at:
http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/index.php?showtopic=1871
On pages 5 and 6 he has a history of St. Louis FD Companies and their locations over the years. It is very interesting information on the history of St. Louis company locations. You will note as you look through this that St. Louis has a history of re-numbering its fire stations over the years. It looked like that happened in the early 40s when they went from stations numbered as high as "57" to a numbering system that ended with the number of companies still in service at that time.
Even when Paige Van Vorst and I visited in 1965, a number of the St. Louis Stations had a higher number etched in concrete above the apparatus door than the engine company stationed inside. For example, Engine 13 was in a station at 1400 Shawmut Place that was numbered in the 40s. I imagine the concept was to have no companies numbered higher than the number of companies actually still in service. That's an OK concept, but it sure leads to a lot of confusion over the years.
The same re-numbering occurred in 1974-75-76 when St. Louis got rid of Stations (and Engines) numbered above 38 and renumbered their stations (Engines) in vacated numbers below 39. Engines 40 & 41 became Engines 15 and 25 in the station on Delmar for example.

Good shots Phil! I like the Metro West engine, very cool graphics and color scheme.

Correct...some of the houses still have those numbers!

Nice job, and a great look back at the St. louis FD prior to the "quint concept" which changed how that department and many others operate today.
Thanks for the compliment Micah!! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
Does anyone know if the chiefs were always "800" series on the radios?
ie. 802 for Battalion 2 and so on....
Or were they ever referrred to as "Battalion 2" and so on?

Any idea on which companies were in which Battalion prior to the Quint Concept?
Thanks.

Various reserve apparatus and other support units located thru out all of these houses.
StLFF34 - Back in 1965 St. Louis was already using the 800 series numbers for their chiefs. Here are the chiefs and assignemts in 1965:
800 Assistant Chief
801 1st Bn @ Engine 40, 921 Delmar
802 2nd Bn @ Engine 2, 314 South 12th
803 3rd Bn @ Engine 35, 5450 Arsenal
804 4th Bn @ Engine 4, 4425 S Compton
805 5th Bn @ Engine 8, 1501 Salisbury
806 6th Bn @ Engine 12, 5214 W Florissant
807 7th Bn @ Engine 43, 4810 Enright
808 8th Bn @ Engine 1, 2413 Mc Nair
809 9th Bn @ Engine 30. 541 DeBaliviere
810 Chief Inspectors Car
811 Fire Marshall
812 Executive Deputy
Car A- Chief of Dept
Car B- Deputy
Car C- Master Mechanic
Car D- Public Safety Director
Id like to know how they fit a pumper and a chief buggy in the 8's house! Even w/the size of rigs back in 1965 that had to be a tight fit!

Now some more questions for the St. Louis area guys:
Where are the Air Units quartered?
Where is the Command Unit quartered?
Where is Squad Co. 02 quartered?
Where are the Foam Unit(s) located?
What are the Airport Units (Engine 44/Ladder 44?) and what Battalion are they in?
Can someone confirm that the following companies have been disbanded:
E3, E15, E21, E25, E38, H&L1, H&L 3, H&L10, H&L12, H&L13, H&L14, H&L16, H&L17, H&L18 and all the Snorkel Co.'s.
Thanks for the tolerating all the nit picky questions.
The last time I saw it the Air Unit was housed at station 1 on Jefferson. Housed with E-1, Rescue 1, Collapse Rescue.
Squad 2 is quartered with E-29 at Vandeventer and Forest Park Parkway.
Im not sure on the numberinf for the Airport units, but they are District 8.
The companies that you listed have been disbanded.
Sorry that I couldnt help with your other questions. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
The St. Louis Metro has a metro numbering system. St. Louis County, Jefferson County, St. Charles County use the 4 digit numbering. St. Louis City and the City of Brentwood are the only departments that do not follow this numbering. The first 2 numbers represent the department. The 3rd is station number. The 4th is type of apparatus.
0-Engine
1-Second Out engine
2-Ladder Co.
3-Tanker
4-Rescue/engine
5- Quint
6-Rescue Co./Squad
7-Medics
8-utility/brush
9-utility/brush/marine
An Example is:
Metro West 3354.
33- Metro West
5- Station 5
4- Rescue Engine
Also, no department in the area has more than 7 stations. 8 or 9 in the station slot represents reserve units. Its a very nice system. So departments number their quints as truck co. Im not sure why on that. I hope I made all of this make sense. If you have another question about just ask.
Phil,
Thanks for the info on the numbering system, can you also list each departments 2 digit identifier for all 3 counties? It sure would make life easier when I'm down there to know what city is getting dispatched. Thanks in advance!

Sorry I dont know any of the blanks off hand. Some of the blanks arent departments, I was just numbering. But I was able to get the departments that you will more likely see. The numbers passed 52 are farther out departments. With the exceptions of 71, 74, 87, 94 these border St. Louis County. 91, 92, 95 are in the suburbs off of I-70 in St. Charles, but are quite a drive.
Dennis,
What part of St. Louis are you staying in? Maybe I could help you with the departments that are closer to where you will be.
