Thank you Dennis. I'm aware of another St. Louis thread that has some photos of the 21 Howe engines purchased in 1977 in it. I am also really curious to see if there what other apparatus purchases were made by the St. Louis FD before they went to the "Quint" concept in 1988-1989.

On pages 5 and 6 he has a history of St. Louis FD Companies and their locations over the years. It is very interesting information on the history of St. Louis company locations. You will note as you look through this that St. Louis has a history of re-numbering its fire stations over the years. It looked like that happened in the early 40s when they went from stations numbered as high as "57" to a numbering system that ended with the number of companies still in service at that time.



Even when Paige Van Vorst and I visited in 1965, a number of the St. Louis Stations had a higher number etched in concrete above the apparatus door than the engine company stationed inside. For example, Engine 13 was in a station at 1400 Shawmut Place that was numbered in the 40s. I imagine the concept was to have no companies numbered higher than the number of companies actually still in service. That's an OK concept, but it sure leads to a lot of confusion over the years.



The same re-numbering occurred in 1974-75-76 when St. Louis got rid of Stations (and Engines) numbered above 38 and renumbered their stations (Engines) in vacated numbers below 39. Engines 40 & 41 became Engines 15 and 25 in the station on Delmar for example.

St. Louis had a few fire stations at the time that were identified with hyphenated double numbering. St.Louis "Station 5-25" at 2123 N Market was similarly identified.

Correct...some of the houses still have those numbers!

Does anyone know if the chiefs were always "800" series on the radios?



ie. 802 for Battalion 2 and so on....



Or were they ever referrred to as "Battalion 2" and so on?

Can someone confirm that the following companies have been disbanded:



E3, E15, E21, E25, E38, H&L1, H&L 3, H&L10, H&L12, H&L13, H&L14, H&L16, H&L17, H&L18 and all the Snorkel Co.'s.

The last time I saw it the Air Unit was housed at station 1 on Jefferson. Housed with E-1, Rescue 1, Collapse Rescue.

Squad 2 is quartered with E-29 at Vandeventer and Forest Park Parkway.

Im not sure on the numberinf for the Airport units, but they are District 8.

The companies that you listed have been disbanded.

Sorry I dont know any of the blanks off hand. Some of the blanks arent departments, I was just numbering. But I was able to get the departments that you will more likely see. The numbers passed 52 are farther out departments. With the exceptions of 71, 74, 87, 94 these border St. Louis County. 91, 92, 95 are in the suburbs off of I-70 in St. Charles, but are quite a drive.
