22's apron dumps onto the rightmost side of a wierd Y shaped intersection and there are station signs coming from all directions on both streets, but back to topic, excellent shots as always!

City traffic folks are not too bright. Several stations have the firehouse signs directly in front of, or after the station. Most don't have any at all.

I am sorry that it took so long for me to get back here... I finally got DSL so I could upload these pics! I have a few documents to scan and load too.



First, I'd like to offer this picture of old Truck 1. I got it years ago in a stack of documents that were about to be thrown away. Specifically, I got them 1989 or 90 when a man from purchasing was retiring and cleaning out his file cabinet. He had all of the proposals for bids from when old T1 was purchased. this was 1967, and I have the bid packages from ALF, Pirsch, and from Charles McLarty (the vendor in Dekalb county). Here is the factory photo from the eventual winner, Pirsch, in Kenosha Wisconsin. It still has the business card from McLarty stapled to it!

If I might, I'd like to add some more to this story. Some of the actual bid packages also included example pics showing what the truck would look like if AFD decided to purchas it from the bidder.



One is an example from American LaFrance. It shows a recently purchased New Orleans Truck:

And even More exciting is this one! An example pic of what appears to be Dekalb county Truck 1! What year would this be? Anyone know?

This one is a factory photo of Atlanta Truck 21.... I'm still trying to figure out what year it was. Anyone know? I believe it to be an 85' ariel. It is obviously a midship mount Pirsch... My guess is around 1966 or '67.

I have also acquired a copy of the 1967 Annual report. T1 was featured prominently on the cover, along with the statue of Chief Nok-A-Homa at the then brand new Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Here is a scan of the cover:

Great Pics! Anything you have would be great. Thanks for sharing. BTW, the pic showing Dekalb County Truck 1 is Dekalb's first ladder company and it is a 1958 Peter Pirsch & Sons with a Chevy/GM commercial tractor. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' /> . I have an ad from the October 1958 Fire Engineering showing a newly delivered Dekalb Truck 1.

This rig was later sold to the City of Jonesboro, GA VFD. It was completely refurbed by the members and painted white over red. They had it until a couple of years ago when the city disbanded the volunteer fire department and the station was absorbed by Clayton Co. FD. The rig was sold and is now in South America, but no longer in use as a fire rig.

I have about 20 years of old AFD annual reports, many have great cover shots as the above. Will start scanning them and post them here. The reports also contained a detailed listing of all the rigs & their locations by station & battalion. They make great reading!

Tom2e- Great old photos. Thankyou. The Ford C/Pirsch Atlanta mid-mount aerial you posted was a 1962 75-foot model, Pirsch #PH-63, delivered on July 20, 1962.



The New Orleans ladder truck pictured was a Ward LaFrance/Thibault 100-foot TDA. They bought two in 1965 and two more in 1968.



Dekalb County purchased a number of Pirsch apparatus on commercial chassis in the 50s and 60s. The Dekalb County ladder truck pictured had a Ford F tractor. Dekalb County also bought a number of Pirsch pumpers built on Ford F chassis (two in 1954, three in 1958, and two in 1961). In 1966 Dekalb County purchased a Pirsch-built 85-foot snorkel on an IHC chassis. Then in 1968 they bought three Pirsch pumpers built on Ford C1000 chassis. Dekalb County also did purchase Pirch-built pumpers on GMC chassis, one in 1952 and two in 1953. Does anyone have any photos of these Dekalb County classics?

Check post #12 on this thread. That pic was shot in Station #29's bay, so obviously it was in reserve status when the shot was taken. The front looks very similar and the AFD logo on the door looks like a sticker over the original logo. I don't know how many Ford/Pirsch's midmounts that AFD had. It appears in the 1975 AFD Yearbook as Truck #26, a 1967. It is the only one of it's kind in the book. (Pic. is on P#233). It is on Co. #29's page, but the pic. is obviously Station #26.

In the 1983 yearbook, there is a Ford that appears as Reserve Truck #21 while they were quartered at #39. (P.#133) This was apparently after the crash of the Mack and the damage to Station #21. I can't tell from the picture if the rig is a midmount or a Ford TDA.

Shoe... I'd go with 1967... the cab looks just like the one on T1, and in addition, the blueprints for T1 (yes they are in the bid package!) were for an open cab, with the roof hand-drawn onto the cab in pen! This leads me to believe that the cab roof was so new that they added it on after the blueprints were drawn.... What do you think?

Does anyone know if Atlanta ever had more than one of these? Can we find out for sure what year that Truck #21 (The Mack) crashed through the back of the bay? Perhaps, #21 got the Ford back for a while after the Mack was crashed... The Mack was a 1973 which means that the Ford in the picture would have been replaced after only 6 years of service. I can't imagine that happening unless there was some serious reason for needing a TL in Buckhead at the time...

The Ford/Pirsch 75' ladder is older than the Ford/Pirsch TDA. The Ford emblem on the cab door is a different style. The one on the 75' ladder was used prior to 1963, the one on the TDA was used from 1963-1968.

I have just gotten a copy of the 1971 Annual Report. The Truck assignments listed are as follows:



Co 21 - a 1950 Peter Pirsch 85 ft arial truck

Co 26 - 1969 Peter Pirsch 75 foot arial truck

Co 29 - 1962 Peter Pirsch 75 foot Arial Truck



That should screw things up further!
