Between 1900 hours on July 3 and 0700 hours on July 21, I was on vacation. Although I was mostly home, I still did not get a chance to review many of my incoming emails which fluctuate between 50 and 200 daily. Fortunately, we do have a separate online work station in "my" comm center so being back for 3 days including a slow Saturday I now have been able to catch up. I am subscribed to every Firepics.net forum with the email method.



BTW, during my vacation, our police chief who had 36 years in the PD reached an agreeement to retire, going on inactive duty using his vacation and comp time; this now makes me the longest full time employee of our PD as I have 31 years.

Are you sure this went to Columbia #1 Fire Department?? There is nothing in the annals of our history that shows this piece... there was a Mack B model pumper... but it was bought by the Fellwick Fire Association in Oreland, Pa and did not have that really awesome body on it. I have talked with quite a number of the older members and none of them remember this piece.

this 1951 gmc/approved from lansford, pa. was privatetly purchased recently not far from lansford. the truck is now part of the fleet from the newly formed "black diamond" chapter of spaamfaa "schuylkill historical fire socieity" the unit is fully operational / functional and has been making occasional appearances. this siting is from pennsylvania pump primers muster 2006.

Dave- As you know,the annual convention book published by the Lancaster County Firemen's Association in conjunction with their convention, frequently shows photos of the apparatus for many of the county fire companies. On June 4, 1977 the 57th Annual Convention was hosted by the Keystone Hook & Ladder Co.No.1 of Columbia borough. If you look at that publication under the headung for Columbia Fire Co.No.1, Columbia,PA you will find a photo which features the three pieces of apparatus in service at that time. They are a Ford walk-in van body, 1955 Mack B semi-cab engine and the Mack B-/Harwick in question. This is clear evidence that this Mack was in deed in service with that company. They only had it from sometime in 1976 to sometime in 1978, a relatively short time. It was lettered Columbia No.1 on the cab doors and C.F.D. on the hood. It was reportedly referred to as the river rescue unit at the time.

Info on the Radnor Mack:





1950 Mack L-95, full-cab, 1000/300, full-width compartmented body. It had the first (Beta Tested) Hale Engine Master Pressure Governor mounted along the lower side of the pump panel, which proved unsatisfactory. Hale moved the control to the top of the pump panel where the units were installed from this point on. Replaced in 1970 and sold to the same fire company in TN as the 1954 Mack ladder.

Totally unbelievable!! This is very exciting stuff to say the least, this piece WAS lost in the annals of hisotry. Everyone knew there was a water rescue vehicle before the Dodge Dipolmat/Boston Whaler combination... this piece is the missing link on the water rescue side!
