Yes, you are correct, Battalion 9's firehouse was connected to the rear of 4 Truck's old firehouse, on the 48th Street side. As far as i know, and from what i've been told by some of the retired members of 4 Truck, the two firehouses were connected, and Battalion 9 was the only unit to ever operate out of the old firehouse in the rear. The original 4 Truck firehouse in the pic above was ORIGINALLY the old volunteer firehouse of Empire Hook & Ladder 8. On Sept. 18th, 1865, Ladder 4 of the New York City Fire Department was organized in this house, after the volunteers had been disbanded. These two firehouses lasted until 1972 when they were demolished to make way for the current firehouse. Engine 54 was a single engine right around the corner at 304 West 47th St. When the new firehouse was opened on the site of L-4 and Batt. 9's old house, Engine 54 was moved in there also, and 54's old house was vacated. 54's old house is still there on West 47th Street and is currently the home of The Puerto Rican Theatre.



Funny that you mention Mama Leone's also. From what some of the old timers have told me, Mama Leone's would bring dinner over to the firehouse every Friday night.



As for the old ALF tiller that you saw, if you saw it in 1967, then they were using their 1961 ALF tiller. There's a picture of it coming out of the old firehouse on the front cover of the book "American LaFrance 900 Series 1958-1964 Photo Archive" by Larry Phillips.

from what I remember the two houses were connected in the rear....also they were using the ALF tiller....funny, I never set foot in 54's house even though it was right around the corner...also use to vist the qtrs of Eng 65 and Rescue 1....interesting to see the pump pull out of qtrs when the Rescue had a run and on occasion the opposite which was rare.....let me tell you the bells were non stop in the 60's...........bill

This is an interesting photo from my sparse FDNY files - I don't know what's more fascinating, the Mack C aerialscope, or the FDNY stalwart with the slick mustache. I would guess this is the mid to late 1960's.

I believe Andrew Fredericks of Squad 18 is listed many other places as a Lt., does anyone know why the plaques list him as a Firefighter?

I think it's the chief (white helmet) making an adjustment to the water supply connection.

He was most likely promoted after they found him at the site an after the the service. The plaque was most likely made prior to that date. Just the same at rescue 4 they have it as Captain Brian Hickey but he is listed with the dept as a Batt Chief.

What an absolutely historic picture of WT3 !!! That's right across yjr street from E1 /L24. The church is St Francis of Assisi where FDNY chaplain Fr Mychal Judge lived. The school was replaced by the Hotel Pennsylvania in 1920 (and is itself to be demolished and replaced with an office tower by 2011.)

Operations is car 4, EMS chief is car 5.



There's a list in “FDNY - an Operational Reference” on p 49 [July 2003 Rev 67] (at least in my copy; maybe the page has changed since then.) Everything FDNY does and why. If you don't have a copy and want a very good Christmas present it's available from FSP books. Mine cost $30 - less than a tank of gas these days and you all know how long that lasts.



And it was a great day. Those of you who missed it should flag your calendars. It's Sunday of Labor Day weekend and the WW2 vintage aircraft from the American Air Power Museum in Farmingdale NY fly in. Lots of classic NYPD cars on display. The Historic Aircraft Restoration Project (HARP) hangar is open for visitors, as is the bookshop in the main building. Plus the Concorde is on display there too until the USS Intrepid is returned to its pier at W44 St on the Hudson River.

4 Truck's rig in that picture is a 1948 Pirsch aerial. It was the 3rd metal aerial ever delivered to the F.D.N.Y, and was delivered on July 1st 1948. Information came from John Calderone's "Wheels of the Bravest" (1992).

Andy Fredericks, along with ALOT of our other Brothers who were killed on Sept. 11th, were promoted Posthumously. Any of those guys who were already on an existing promotional list for the next rank up were automatically promoted. Some times you see the name listed at the rank that the FF was on 9-11, other times, you'll see him listed at his promoted rank.



It happened in more recent times also, with FF Graffagnino of 5 Truck who died at the Deutche Bank building fire, and FF John Bellew from 27 Truck in my house. Both were promoted to Lt. after their deaths.

This also helps the families with a little extra $ in the death beifits and pension. They key is THEY had to have passed the Test before the time of death... Not EVERYONE gets made - just those that earn it...
